A special pathway for certain Canadian permanent residents to sponsor undeclared family members is ending today, September 10, 2026.

Under Canada’s public policy for undeclared family members, certain PRs who did not declare a spouse, common-law partner or dependent child in their original permanent residence application could have been eligible to sponsor them later.

Normally, when applying for PR, all family members must be declared, even if they are not accompanying the applicant to Canada. They may also need to complete medical, background and security checks.

This special public policy applied to eligible applications received between May 31, 2019 and September 10, 2026.

The policy particularly affected certain individuals who became permanent residents as refugees, protected persons, or through spouse/family sponsorship.

September 10, 2026 is the final date covered by this public policy.

If you believe this situation applies to you or your family, it is important to understand your options and seek professional immigration advice.

Canada has expanded the ability of foreign workers to study without a study permit.

Under a new temporary public policy, eligible foreign nationals holding a valid work permit can study in programs of up to 6 months even when the program extends beyond the period they were originally authorized to stay in Canada.

The policy came into effect September 4, 2026 and is currently set to remain in place until December 31, 2027.

The policy is significant because Canada had approximately 1.5 million foreign nationals holding only work permits as of June 30, 2026.

The exemption applies only while the individual's work permit remains valid, or until the policy expires or is revoked.

This is a temporary public policy, so it can be changed or cancelled without prior notice.

If you're a foreign worker in Canada considering a short-term course or training program, it's important to understand whether you qualify before enrolling.

Ontario residents, your next Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) payment is coming!

The September 10, 2026 payment is the third instalment of the 2026–27 OTB benefit year. Eligible residents may receive support through three provincial credits:

🔹 Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC): Up to $378 per eligible person
🔹 Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC): Up to $1,307 for eligible non-seniors
🔹 Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC): Up to $290 for eligible couples and single parents

Your actual payment depends on factors including your 2025 income, family situation, housing costs and eligibility.

If your annual OTB entitlement is $500 or less, the CRA generally pays it as a lump sum, rather than monthly instalments.

Remaining OTB payment dates: October 9, November 10, December 10, January 8, February 10, March 10, April 9, May 10 and June 10, 2027.

Check CRA My Account to confirm your payment amount and direct-deposit information.

09/09/2026

`International students in Canada who originally received their study permits through the now-closed Student Direct Stream (SDS) could face closer scrutiny when applying for extensions.

IRCC is introducing a renewed risk-based review for former SDS students, following a 2026 Auditor General audit that identified major gaps in the original screening process.

In 800 confirmed fraud cases, 541 permits 68% , had originally been approved through SDS. However, this does NOT mean that 68% of all SDS students committed fraud.

IRCC has already been using an advanced analytics model to identify study permit extension applications that may require additional review. Compliance investigations into higher-risk SDS-linked cases are scheduled to begin in September 2026.

If you are a former SDS student, don’t panic. An SDS-issued permit does not automatically mean your extension will be refused. Genuine students should make sure they are actively pursuing their studies, following their permit conditions, and keeping important documents such as transcripts, enrollment records, tuition receipts and financial documents.

If IRCC contacts you with a request for information or a procedural fairness letter, respond carefully and within the deadline.

Stay compliant. Keep your records organized. Be prepared.
