Innovation Village is a new state-of-the-art facility with 95,000 square feet of meeting spaces, study pods, and labs where students, employees, and industry can collaborate. True to its name, the $58 million facility is packed with tech, including automation, virtual reality, and testing equipment. A key space is The Kalihwíyo Circle, a welcoming meeting place that showcases Indigenous stories.

• For the second year in a row, everyone from the graduating class of the Dental Hygiene program achieved a 100% pass rate on the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination.
• Students and faculty from the Respiratory Therapy program presented their AI-driven lung ultrasound research to respiratory therapy professionals from across Canada at the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists National Forum.
• The college received funding from the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer to develop healthcare pathway opportunities and expand access to Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition for students in high-demand healthcare programs.
• Fanshawe Global (the college's international corporate training and consultancy arm, that specializes in customized training, skills upgrading, and corporate solutions worldwide) hosted 21 educators from Tanzania's Folk Development Colleges for an intensive culinary training program.
• A professor of the Flight Services program, Haley Whitelaw, was named to the Women in Aviation International’s Emerging Leaders Class of 2026.

It’s that time of year when London, Ontario’s 88,000 post-secondary students are starting to think about school. Sorry to bring it up early, but did you know that about 40,000 of those students will be hitting the campus at London’s WESTERN UNIVERSITY?

Did you also know that major international rankings, like The Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR), puts Western in the top 1% of the more than 20,000 universities around the world?

Western offers 88 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral programs including medicine, business, law, dentistry, and engineering.

In exciting Western news …

A massive wave of federal research funding has hit Western recently, including:
• A $9.8 million federal grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
• $19 million in Discovery Grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Healthcare News
• The Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western has introduced a graduate-level Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS), designed to train medical personnel directly alongside MD students.
• Western is part of a national project funded by the SSHRC aimed at deploying community resources to help older Canadians age safely in their own homes.

Space News
• The Western Space program successfully launched its new, state-of-the-art Mission Control Facility on campus to monitor satellite data and simulation environments.
• Western planetary scientists are part of an active NASA mission in Hawaii mapping the moon’s volcanic history.

Since we’re having a bit of a heat wave right now here in London, Ontario – we thought it’d be a great time to talk about all the water that surrounds the Forest City.

Like our namesake across the ocean, we have a river called the Thames that runs through the city. Right in the heart of the city in fact, as the North and South branches meet at the Forks of the Thames in the centre of London, where you can visit the Walter J. Blackburn memorial fountain.

The Thames spans 273 kilometres (about 170 miles) from its headwaters to Lake St. Clair. It is a Canadian Heritage River – a designation that means it is part of a network of waterways that are cared for by governments, local communities, conservation authorities, and local citizens who come together as stewards to protect designated rivers.

Londoners enjoy year-round outdoor recreation on the river, like paddling canoes and kayaks through forests, fly fishing for bass and pike, and cycling, running, walking, or rolling along the 40-kilometre, paved, multi-use path - the Thames Valley Parkway. The river corridor also contains about 2,800 acres of parkland and trails.

London is also surrounded by three of the five Great Lakes. There’s Lake Huron to the north, Lake Ontario to the east, and Lake Erie to the south. You can swim, canoe, kayak, paddle board, sail, water ski, and much more. You can also bike, hike, fish, camp, birdwatch, or stroll along a waterfront trail.

With its beachy, small-town charm, Grand Bend on Lake Huron is a classic summer day trip for Londoners. At just under an hour from the city, Grand Bend Beach is a sandy beach with warm, shallow waters and beautiful sunsets on Lake Huron’s southern shores. You can explore “the strip” for fun outdoor patios, bars, restaurants, and shops, or hop on a bike and ride out to Pinery Provincial Park.

Port Stanley is on Lake Erie’s north shore, another beach town full of sandy beaches, boutiques, restaurants, and cafés, and only about 45 minutes from London. Some other beaches nearby are Ipperwash, Bayfield, Goderich, Long Point, Port Dover, and Port Burwell, known for soft sand and shallow water.

Here are some interesting facts about Canada:

Geography
• Canada is the 2nd largest country.
• The Canada-US border is the longest in the world.
• Alert, Nunavut, is the world's most northern settlement.
• Santa has an official Canadian postal code – H0H 0H0 – established by Canada Post to help get millions of letters to the North Pole every year.

Education
• Canada is one of the most educated countries.
• 95% of Canadians have a high school diploma & nearly 64% of working-age Canadians have a college/university degree.

Food
• Canada has a high standard of food security & quality.
• We produce a whopping 71% of the world’s maple syrup.
• Despite its name - Hawaiian pizza was invented just over an hour away from London, Ontario in Chatham in 1962.
• We’re not sure where our beloved poutine (French fries, gravy, cheese curds) was invented, but assume it was somewhere in the province of Quebec.
• We are the leading global consumers of mac & cheese and doughnuts.

Sports
• Canada has two national sports. Summer is lacrosse – a sport that started more than 500 years ago in First Nations communities. As a surprise to no one – winter is hockey.

• The first 8 women’s World Hockey Championships were won by Canada.

Wildlife
• We have 2.4 million caribou, 72k elk, & the largest moose population, at around 1 million.
• 22 species of whales swim in Canadian waters.
• Canada is home to 380k black bears, almost 30k grizzlies, and 15.5k of the world’s 25k polar bears.
• Don’t worry though – London, Ontario doesn’t have any of the big, scary stuff. London has animals like white-tailed deer, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, & foxes.
• Oh, but we can’t forget the Canada Goose. This large bird can be peaceful, but it often chooses violence during nesting season & has earned the affectionate nickname – Murder Chicken.

Did you know that London, Ontario is home to many diverse communities?

To celebrate summer, we thought we’d give a quick list of some of the many wonderful cultural festivals and events happening this summer in the Forest City.

• London Multicultural Festival is a family-friendly event featuring ethnic food, live performances, and craft vendors.
• Love to dance? The Latin Street Party and the Latin Community Festival are the places to be to experience the energy of London’s local Latin community.
• Pupusas Festival celebrates Salvadoran and Honduran cultures with food, music, and dancing.
• Island Fest is a popular Caribbean celebration with food, cocktails, and talented musicians.
• With its vibrant Colombian population, it’s not a surprise that London’s Colombian Gastronomy Festival is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year.
• Not exactly summer – the Afro Fiesta Festival happens in September – but mark it in the calendar, this popular festival celebrates African and Caribbean culture through music, food, art, and dance.

Hello from a sunny and warm London, Ontario☀️

Since the weather is a topic that comes up A LOT, we thought now would be a great time to discuss it, because the current temperature is around 23°C (about 73°F) under partly sunny skies. We do experience humidity here so the feel-like temperature is about 25°C (about 77°F).

Technically speaking, London has a humid continental climate and like many parts of the U.S., we have four distinct seasons:

Spring
Spring is beautiful, but highly unpredictable. Temps fluctuate from near freezing in March and rising into the low 20s°C (around 68°F) by late May. There’s a mix of pleasant, sunny days, frequent spring showers, and although it’s rare, we occasionally even get snow.

Summer
We enjoy warm, sometimes hot, summer days with temps between 15°C and 27°C (59°F to 81°F). The humidity can bring rainy days and thunderstorms too.

Autumn
Fall tends to be a gorgeous, comfortable season with mild, sunny days and crisp, cool evenings. Temperatures typically range from 20°C in September to 10°C (50°F) by late October.

And finally … the most frequently asked about season - Winter

We have mostly cold winters ranging from -6°C to -1°C (21°F to 30°F). A cold snap can drop temps even lower, but they don’t tend to last too long.

The nearby Great Lakes, the closest being Lake Huron and Lake Erie, are a big influence. Good news - they moderate temperatures. But if you aren’t a snow-lover or winter sport enthusiast, the not-so-good news is that they also bring cloud cover and snow. Winter is officially three months, but snow can arrive as early as October and has been known to persist into April. Average total annual snowfall is around 194 cm (about 76 inches).

Full disclosure (because we all have Google) - London sits in the path of lake-effect snow coming off Lake Huron, meaning the city can get (for lack of a better word) hammered with localized heavy and intense snow squalls sometimes.

Did you know London is a major hub for Canada's video game industry? The Forest City is home to nearly 15 gaming companies, from indie studios to globally recognized developers.

Here are just a few:

BIG BLUE BUBBLE is a pioneer with more than 100 titles on a variety of platforms. Founded in 2004, they are Canada’s largest independent mobile gaming company. Best known for My Singing Monsters - a wildly popular franchise with 150 million players worldwide. Recent additions to the game, include globally renowned musicians like T-Pain, bbno$, and CG5.

DIGITAL EXTREMES has been creating games for more than 25 years, including the global success Warframe and the action game Soulframe. Founder James Schmalz started programming PC games in high school before starting Digital Extremes in 1993. The studio’s work includes the OG - Epic Pinball, the Unreal franchise, Homefront, and The Darkness II. On July 10th & 11th, they will host their annual TennoCon 2026, a large fan convention and community gathering.

BIG VIKING GAMES is the largest independent mobile/social game studio in Canada and a pioneer in mobile HTML5 games. Founded in 2011, they are known for titles like YoWorld and FishWorld, and now have partnered with comic book publisher Valiant Entertainment.

TINY TITAN STUDIOS, is a well-known mobile game developer/publisher of arcade and retro-style titles. Founded in 2014 by Jeff Evans, Tiny Titan has created many games, including Tiny Rails, Kung Fu Z, Arena Stars, Dash Quest, and Dash Quest 2. In late 2021, Tiny Titan’s mobile catalog was acquired by Danish firm, Trophy Games Development.

After the sale, Evans rebranded the console and PC-focused part of Tiny Titan under a new studio name - DOOM TURTLE. They are best known for hit rogue-lite adventure Ember Knights and their newest title, Legends of Starkadia. Evans also operates the local London tabletop gaming store, Mana Lounge, as well as Mana Pinball.

What’s the aviation sector like in London, Ontario? Is there one?

ANSWER:

You bet! Quite a large and dynamic aviation industry actually.

We’ll start with the London International Airport, a full-service, modern airport only 10 kms (about 6.2 miles) from downtown. This busy passenger airport is also a 24-hour, modern cargo hub. As the 12th busiest passenger airport in Canada and the 11th busiest airport in aircraft take-offs and landings, it ranks in the top 10 of employers in the London area.

There are many companies located at or near London’s airport including:

International Test Pilot School Canada (ITPS), the world’s largest independent flight test training organization. It trains test pilots and flight test engineers from over 25 countries and also provides services for major aerospace manufacturers.

Diamond Flight Center has been training pilots since 2009 as a designated Private Career College and a Designated Learning Institution for international students.

Fanshawe College has Norton Wolf School of Aviation & Aerospace Technology, housed in an 80,000 sq ft. hangar . It provides 9 aviation and aerospace programs including Transport Canada-approved Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME), Commercial Flight & Aviation Leadership, Composites & Advanced Materials Aerospace Manufacturing, and Remotely Piloted Aerial Systems (RPAS) Commercial Operations.

But London’s aviation industry is not just about training pilots …

Diamond Aircraft’s state-of-the-art facilities have been manufacturing a full line of aircraft in London since 1992. It’s a major NA manufacturing hub for general aviation piston aircraft and for designing, testing, and producing advanced composite aircraft.

North Aircraft develops and manufactures composite structural components and airframes for the aerospace industry.

XU Aviation Ltd. has been maintaining and repairing a variety of aircraft for over 35 years. It is a Transport Canada Approved Maintenance Organization.

Did you know Jeremy Hansen, one of the four astronauts who just rocketed into space on NASA's Artemis II mission, was born in London, Ontario?

This multi-billion-dollar mission has a lofty goal – to be the first humans in decades to make a trip around the moon and back. With this mission, NASA is looking to future flights to the moon and then eventually, Mars.

In a first for Canada, Hansen is now the first Canadian to reach deep space!

He was a kid when he first dreamed about space and turned his treehouse into a spaceship. Fast forward a few decades and now Hansen has turned that dream into reality on the Artemis II Mission.

After growing up on a farm, Hansen’s dream of flying started as a fighter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Hansen was chosen by the Canadian Space Agency to be an astronaut in 2009 and has been busy in many incredible roles. He has been capsule communicator, the person in mission control who speaks directly to the crew in space. The European Space Agency invited him to participate in an experiment testing human performance in a cave in Sardinia, an island off of Italy.

Hansen was also a crew member with NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO), where he spent ten days in an underwater habitat off the coast of Florida. NEEMO astronauts where spacesuits and use the ocean floor to practise walking on a surface much like the moon in a simulation of the international space station.

With a Bachelor of science in space science and a master of science in physics, Hansen has shared his story often and has spoken to students from across Canada to encourage them to pursue their dreams.

When considering a move to a new city, where you’re going to live is probably the biggest decision you will face. We’ve received some feedback on our newsletter that some of you would love to know more about London’s many neighbourhoods. (Did you know about our newsletter? Neighbourhoods are such an important topic, because the neighbourhoods that make up a city are not simply geographically defined spaces. We are humans after all. We build communities, we interact, we share common spaces, and we form important social networks that are unique to our needs.

For our first neighbourhood spotlight, we’d like to introduce you to one of the London’s oldest and most unique spots …

• Old South aka Wortley Village is a quaint, artsy, immensely walkable neighbourhood just south of downtown. One of London's oldest neighbourhoods, the tree-lined streets of Old South have everything from renovated heritage cottages and untouched bungalows to large, historic homes that give the neighbourhood a special eclectic charm. Known for its vibrant, artistic scene, Wortley Village is the centre of activity in this neighbourhood. It exudes a unique small-town vibe in all the coffee places, boutique stores, and diverse restaurants. There’s plenty of green space too, like the city’s largest park, Victoria Park, as well as Thames Park and, "The Green" that’s a bustling spot for community events. The people who call this neighbourhood home range from families with kids to young professionals to retirees.

Fun Fact: Wortley Village was once named the "nation's best neighbourhood" in a competition sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Planners.
