The most recent high-profile “new virus” story as of May 7, 2026, is a hantavirus cluster linked to a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean.
Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship (MV Hondius)
A cluster of severe respiratory illnesses was reported to the WHO on May 2, 2026. The ship, carrying about 147 passengers and crew from multiple countries, is currently near Cape Verde (off West Africa) and heading toward the Canary Islands.
Cases (as of early May updates): Several confirmed hantavirus cases (including the Andes strain), with 3 deaths reported. Additional suspected cases, some evacuated for treatment (including one in ICU in South Africa). A few mild cases also noted. Passengers remain on board with restrictions.
Hantaviruses are typically rodent-borne (via urine, droppings, saliva). Human-to-human transmission is rare but possible with the Andes strain under close/prolonged contact.
Investigations are ongoing into the source (possibly rodents on the ship) and any further spread. A post-cruise case was confirmed in Switzerland.
WHO states public risk is currently low; it’s not being treated as the start of a pandemic. Sequencing and contact tracing continue.
This is a rare event for a cruise ship and is dominating recent headlines.
