From labourer to scaffolder journeyperson, Shermon Perpie has spent over nine years building his career across six PCL Energy projects.

PE: What first introduced you to the skilled trades? And how did your journey with PCL Energy begin?
SP: After school, I got my first opportunity in the construction industry through a friend who owned a construction company. My journey with PCL Energy began as a labourer. About six months later, I was given the opportunity to enroll in a scaffolding apprenticeship. I took that opportunity and continued to learn, develop my skills and grow within the trade.
PE: What’s your favorite part of your job, and why?
SP: My favourite part is planning and executing with my crew, which allows other trades to complete their tasks safely and efficiently. Knowing that our work plays an important role in the success of the entire project is rewarding.
PE: What advice would you give to someone new starting out in the trades or at PCL Energy?
SP: Be willing to learn. Take advantage of the training and courses available to you, ask lots of questions and don't be afraid to learn from the people around you.
PE: Do you have a favorite project you've worked on? What made it stand out?
SP: The project that I'm on right now is my favourite so far. Because it's a smaller project, I've had the opportunity to get to know my coworkers better, and we have a strong and supportive crew in the scaffold department. I also enjoy being surrounded by the area's natural beauty and weather, which makes it memorable.
PE: How do you unwind after a busy day at work?
SP: I like to unwind by staying active, whether that's going to the gym, running or playing football. On quieter evenings, I enjoy reading, writing to reflect on my day or listening to music.
