CRNA renewal time is upon us!

For RN's renewing your practise permits under the UNA main body Collective Agreement provisions:

Reimbursement of CRNA professional & CNPS standard professional liability protection fees will apply to PRACTISING permits with qualifying hours of 684.6 in the April 1, 2025 - March 31, 2026 fiscal year.

Eligibility for reimbursement is calculated by the employer and applied to a regular pay after registration closes. (this may be delayed a few pay periods to allow for CRNA reporting of active registrations to employers).
No expense form entry is required for eligible members.

Please note - If you choose to renew with a non-practising permit, you will only receive that fee and when you return to practise, the difference will not be reimbursed.

Reimbursement payment will be received by those members on leave upon the employee's return to work.

As per the Collective Agreement,
ARTICLE 35: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 35.06
if you hold a regular position
... "for purposes of achieving the threshold of 684.6 hours required to qualify for reimbursement under this Article.
(b) Regular hours actually worked in clause (a) includes:
(i) Leaves of absence for Union or Local business;
(ii) Other leaves of absence of one (1) month or less;
(iii) Time on sick leave with pay;
(iv) Absences while receiving Worker’s Compensation;
(v) Educational leave up to 24 months; and
(vi) Maternity, Parental, Compassionate/Terminal Care, Critical Illness of a Child, or Death or Disappearance of Child leaves."

Alberta's Bill 11 creates the legal framework for American-style, two-tier health care and the establishment of private health insurance, while allowing private payment for medically necessary care. This law will cause gross inequities in access to health care in Alberta and it threatens public health care across Canada.

United Nurses of Alberta encourages members to support a national day of action on September 1 to oppose two-tier American-style health care in Alberta.

Alberta's government passed Bill 11, the Health Statutes Amendment Act 2025 (No.2) in the Alberta Legislature last year, and parts of the law that UNA is deeply concerned about will come into effect on September 1, 2026.

1. Bill 11 establishes an unprecedented model of two-tiered health care access in Alberta by allowing physicians to work in both the public and private systems concurrently, including charging patients out of pocket. Countries that already allow dual practice have no better wait times than Canada, and some actually have longer wait times. A two-tier health care system draws resources out of the public system and allows wealthy people to pay out of pocket to jump the queue, increasing wait times for the majority of people.

2. Bill 11 creates Canada’s first private insurance market for medically necessary care, which will drive up health care costs. Bringing U.S. style private health insurance into Alberta, including expanded workplace plans, will not stop at the Alberta border. Bill 11 will feed a market of private health insurance that will use every method it can to expand across Canada. Allowing this foothold in Canada would mean our single-payer health care will no longer be protected from trade agreements with the United States.

The Indigenous Caucus promotes the inclusion of Indigenous Nurses within UNA in a safe and supportive environment, with a focus on advancing the Truth and Reconciliatior Commission's Calls to Action.

This meeting is open to all UNA members who self-identify as Indigenous, as well as all UNA nembers who identify as Alies.
