An offer in hand while other interviews are still in progress is a good problem to have. It is also where strong candidates often rush a decision they later regret.

Start with the employer that made the offer. Thank them, confirm the deadline, and if you need more time, ask for a specific date. Most employers expect candidates to be exploring more than one opportunity.

Then update the other employers you would genuinely consider. Some will move faster, and some will say they cannot. Either answer helps you decide.

When you compare offers, look past base salary. The manager, the scope of the role, where it leads, and how stable the team is often matter more than a modest difference in pay.

Once you say yes, mean it. Backing out of an accepted offer can damage your relationship with that employer and with the recruiter who represented you.

If you are working with a recruiter, involve them early. Managing timelines between employers is part of what we do.

For many roles, resumes are becoming harder to evaluate, and it is not because candidates are less qualified. AI writing tools can help people tailor their experience to the language of a job posting very quickly, and one-click applications make it easy to send that resume to many employers at once. As a result, hiring teams are often reviewing a large number of applications that are well written and closely matched to the posting, which makes it difficult to see real differences between candidates on paper.

The resume is still a useful starting point, but it can no longer carry the screening process on its own. Here are seven practical ways employers can look past the presentation and find evidence of what a candidate can actually do.

Canada’s hiring market may look steady at a national level, but that does not mean every employer is hiring in the same market.

In Q2 2026, Canada recorded 510,200 job vacancies and a 2.8% vacancy rate. Look beneath those numbers, though, and the picture varies significantly by occupation, skill requirements and location.

For employers, that distinction matters. The availability of talent for one role may look very different from another, even within the same organization.

Temp-to-hire gives employers something a traditional interview cannot: the opportunity to see someone operate in the role before making a permanent hiring decision.

But simply completing the assignment is not enough to determine long-term fit.

The strongest decisions come from knowing what you are evaluating from the start. How does the individual exercise judgment? Take ownership? Work with the team? And does the permanent opportunity align with what they are looking for too?

A successful conversion should not be a last-minute decision at the end of a contract.

74% of Canadian hiring managers feel positive about their hiring outlook for the rest of 2026. At the same time, 32% say they have open positions they cannot fill, and 30% say the hiring process takes at least four weeks.
