National Indigenous History Month is a time for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people celebrate, acknowledge and educated themselves about history of the first people of this land.
Below we choose a variety of Indigenous people (First Nation, Métis and Inuit) who have made history or who are still making history. We have provided a short description of the mark they have made in the history books.
People like the Right Honourable Mary Simon, the first Inuk from Nunavik region in Quebec and first First Nations Premier Indigenous provincial Premier Wab Kinew from Onigaming First Nation in Treaty 3 territory are still making history with their contributions to our society that benefit all Canadian and provide role models to people that you can be anything you want.
We also encourage you to look back at history, find things written and said by Indigenous scholars, authors and knowledge keepers. There are various approaches to understanding history and it's important to have a broad range of information to be informed.
