CONSUL GENERAL PATRON CALLS ON SPRUCE GROVE MAYOR ACKER

Calgary, 28 June 2023 – One day after attending the Filipino community’s 2nd Annual Philippine Heritage Celebration at the Jubilee Park in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Consul General Zaldy Patron paid a courtesy call on Mayor Jeff Acker on 26 June 2023.

Consul General Patron and Mayor Acker shared information about the Filipino community in Spruce Grove, which hosts about 1,345 Filipinos (3.6 percent) out of the town’s total population of 37,645 (as of 2021).

According to Mayor Acker, the Filipinos are very much appreciated and welcomed in Spruce Grove, as he expressed hope that more Filipinos would live in his town.

Mayor Acker also praised the Filipinos for being hardworking and family oriented.

Consul General Patron shared with Mayor Acker some of the initiatives of the Philippine Consulate General in Calgary to promote the welfare of the Filipinos in Alberta, enhance education cooperation between the Philippines and Alberta, and foster Philippine culture and heritage.

Consul General Patron requested Mayor Acker’s help in reaching out to the Filipino nurses in his town to make them aware about the $7.8-million financial grant that is now available to them under the Alberta Government’s Bursary for the Internationally Educated Nurses (BIEN), a program which is now being implemented in fulfilment of the Philippines-Alberta MOU on the Recruitment of Filipino Nurses that was signed on 6 October 2022.

Mayor Acker welcomed the implementation of the MOU.

The two officials agreed to cooperate to promote the welfare of the Filipinos in Spruce Grove.
