Ghosting in hiring goes both ways.

Employers lose time when candidates disappear. Job seekers lose trust when employers stop communicating.

Clear timelines, accurate job descriptions, accessible interview options and timely updates can help keep everyone engaged.

A respectful hiring process requires communication from both sides.

Can inclusive hiring and merit-based hiring go hand in hand?

A recent study discussed in Psychology Today explored an important question: Do people believe diversity comes at the expense of merit?

The findings were thought-provoking.

Researchers found that many people assume diversity initiatives reduce merit—even when those initiatives simply expand the pool of qualified applicants. When hiring decisions were described as being based solely on qualifications, without considering demographic information, people across the political spectrum viewed the process as equally merit-based.

At Able & Available, we've always believed that inclusion isn't about lowering standards.

It's about removing barriers that prevent qualified people from having an equal opportunity to compete.

For people with disabilities, those barriers can include inaccessible application systems, interview processes that don't accommodate different needs, or job descriptions that unintentionally exclude qualified candidates.

When employers make hiring more accessible, they're not changing the definition of merit—they're making sure merit has the opportunity to be recognized.

What are your thoughts? Can organizations strengthen both inclusion and merit at the same time?

AI is changing how employers interview candidates. Some companies are returning to in-person interviews to make sure they are evaluating the candidate—not AI-generated answers.

But hiring integrity should not come at the cost of accessibility.

Employers can verify skills while continuing to offer accessible interview options and accommodations. Technology may change recruitment, but it should not move inclusion backwards.

What if part of Canada’s labour shortage could be addressed by changing where—and how—employers recruit?

According to an article by Inclusion Canada and Autism Alliance of Canada, approximately 500,000 Autistic people and people with intellectual disabilities are being left on the sidelines of Canada’s workforce.

This isn’t a shortage of ability. It’s a gap in opportunity.

Inclusive recruitment gives employers access to skilled and motivated candidates who may be missed by traditional hiring practices.

Employers across Canada say they are struggling to find workers.

At the same time, approximately 500,000 Autistic people and people with intellectual disabilities remain overlooked in the labour market—with roughly three-quarters unemployed or underemployed despite being ready and willing to work.

Canada doesn’t have a shortage of talent. We have a shortage of inclusive opportunities.
