Thinking you'll wait until January to start hiring?
You might want to reconsider.

If you know you'll need to add to your team in the new year, there are some real advantages to getting the process started now.

• You have time to properly define the role and what success looks like.
• You can start conversations with potential candidates before the position becomes urgent.
• You have more flexibility to accommodate notice periods and holiday schedules.
• You can enter January with a shortlist rather than starting your search from scratch.
• You avoid putting unnecessary pressure on your existing team while the position remains vacant.

If you know growth is coming in 2027, now is a good time to start the conversation.

Here's a quick way to stop wasting time in your job search.

Before submitting an application, ask yourself:
Why do I actually want this job?

If the only answer is “because I want to leave my current one,” keep thinking.

Look at:
• The actual responsibilities — do you want to do them?
• The level — is it genuinely a step forward?
• The company — does the business interest you?
• The location and work model — will they work for your life?
• The compensation — is it likely to meet your expectations?
• The experience required — can you make a credible case for yourself?

A targeted job search usually beats a high-volume one.

Hiring managers: assume every strong candidate you meet has options.

Because they probably do.

One of the biggest mistakes companies make is finding someone they really like…..and then slowing down.

Another interview gets pushed to next week.

Feedback takes five days.

Someone needs to meet one more stakeholder.

Meanwhile, another company moves.

If you've met a candidate you could genuinely see joining your team:
• Give feedback quickly
• Be transparent about next steps
• Keep communication open between interviews
• Don't add unnecessary stages
• Make decisions when you have enough information

You can spend weeks searching for the right person and lose them in a few days.

It sounds like the easiest interview question.

It’s also one of the easiest to get wrong.

When an interviewer says, “Tell me about yourself,” they aren't asking for a chronological walkthrough of your entire career.

Give them the highlight reel.

Try this simple structure:

Where you are now:
Your current role, scope and area of expertise.

How you got here:
One or two relevant pieces of experience that connect you to this opportunity.

Where you're going:
What you're looking for next and why this role caught your attention.

Aim for about 60–90 seconds.

The goal isn't to tell them everything about you.

It's to give them enough context that they want to ask you more.

There’s something about September.

Summer winds down. People get back into routine. Hiring picks up. And a lot of professionals start asking themselves:

"Do I really want to be doing this same thing next year?"

If a career move has been sitting in the back of your mind, September is a good time to get intentional about it.

Start with three questions:
• What would need to be different in my next role?
• What am I no longer willing to compromise on?
• What would make an opportunity worth leaving for?

Update your resume. Reconnect with your network. Talk to a recruiter. See what's out there.

"What are your salary expectations?"

It's a simple question that catches a surprising number of candidates off guard.

Before starting a job search, know four numbers:
1. Your current total compensation
Not just salary. Include bonus, RRSP matching, allowances and other meaningful compensation.
2. Your market value
Research what comparable roles are paying in your market.
3. Your target
What would make a move financially worthwhile?
4. Your minimum

At what point would the move simply not make sense?

And remember: compensation isn't only about base salary.

Vacation, bonus potential, benefits, flexibility, commute, retirement contributions and career growth all have value.

It makes the compensation conversation much easier and helps us avoid bringing you opportunities that were never going to make sense.

We see this more often than you might think.

A company starts a search looking for someone who has:
10+ years of experience.
Their exact industry.
Every system they've ever used.
A specific designation.
Leadership experience.
The perfect personality fit.

And then wonders why the shortlist is so small.

Before calling something a "must-have," ask:
Would we genuinely reject an otherwise exceptional candidate because they don't have this?

If the answer is no, it's probably a preference.

Separate your requirements into three categories:
• Must have to perform the job
• Can be learned
• Nice to have

The person who checks 8 out of 10 boxes but brings curiosity, capability and the right experience may outperform the person who checks all 10.

Sometimes better hiring starts with a shorter wish list.
