New U.S. tariffs could put thousands of Canadian jobs at risk with Ontario expected to feel some of the strongest effects.

For employees, economic uncertainty can quickly turn into questions about layoffs, severance, and workplace rights. A “temporary layoff” isn’t always as straightforward as it sounds, and accepting or signing something too quickly may affect your options.

Know your rights. Understand your severance. And before signing anything, get the right advice.

Never sign a severance package just because you're being pressured to decide quickly.

A severance agreement usually includes a release, meaning you may be giving up your right to pursue additional compensation or legal claims.

That first offer may not reflect what you're actually entitled to under Ontario law. Before you sign, take a step back, review the terms, and get legal advice.

Once you sign, your options may be limited.

Fired? Don’t assume the first severance offer is all you’re entitled to.

Your employment contract, termination clause, ESA minimums, and common-law notice can all affect what you may receive.

And just because a termination clause is written into your contract doesn’t automatically mean it’s enforceable.

Before you sign or accept anything, get your termination package reviewed. That one step could make a significant difference to what you walk away with.

Fired? Don't assume the first severance offer is all you're entitled to.

Your employment contract, termination clause, ESA minimums, and potential common-law entitlement can all affect what you receive.

A termination clause that looks straightforward may not always be enforceable and common-law notice can be significantly higher than the statutory minimum.

Before you sign or accept anything, get your termination package reviewed.

Oracle is cutting again and if you're an employee in Ontario, don't assume a layoff email means you know what you're owed.

With major workforce reductions, the way your termination happens matters. Your notice, severance, bonuses, RSUs, and employment contract can all affect your entitlement.

Even if the termination comes suddenly, that doesn't necessarily mean your legal rights disappear.

Before you sign anything, get your offer reviewed.

3 months vs. 12 months of severance. Same company. Same job title. So why the difference?

Severance in Ontario isn't a one-size-fits-all calculation. Factors such as age, years of service, position, and availability of comparable employment can all affect reasonable notice.

Your employment contract can also play an important role—especially if it contains a termination clause.

The key takeaway? Don't assume your severance is simply based on your salary or years of service.

👇 Drop your age, job title, and years of service in the comments and let's see what your situation could look like.

Just got fired? Don’t let the pressure make you sign too quickly.

You are not necessarily required to sign termination documents on the spot. A release can mean giving up your right to pursue additional compensation or legal claims.

And if your employer is asking you to resign instead, think carefully resigning can affect your legal position and severance rights.

Slow down. Take the documents home. Read them.

🚨 A severance agreement isn't "just paperwork."

When you sign one, you may be agreeing to:

✔️ Give up your right to pursue legal claims
✔️ Keep certain terms confidential
✔️ Follow restrictions on what you can say about your employer

And the amount being offered may not necessarily be the full compensation you're entitled to.

Before you sign a release or severance agreement, slow down and get it reviewed. Understanding what you're agreeing to could make a significant difference.

Friday severance package. Monday deadline. Feeling pressured to sign? Don’t rush.

A severance package often includes a release, meaning you may be giving up your right to pursue additional compensation or legal claims once you sign.

And remember: the first offer isn't necessarily the final number.

Take your time. Read the documents carefully. Understand what you're being offered—and get legal advice before signing away your rights.

A few days of caution could make a significant difference in your compensation.
