Criss Cross Europe What does a European jazz scene with its own cultural identity look like? How do young jazz musicians find their way into this European jazz scene?

CrissCrossEurope is a cooperation between several European organisations, that gives jazz musicians from different European Countries the opportunity to play abroad. How can jazz musicians improve their employability on a European level and develop their careers on a long term? In what way can organizations that support their national jazz scenes cooperate in shaping such a European jazz scene, an

d meanwhile strengthen their own ability to work transnationally? And how can cultural organizations stimulate musicians to actively pursue an international career? These were the questions that proved foundational to Criss Cross Europe. Criss Cross Europe searches for the building blocks that are the keys to long-term international careers for European musicians. We investigate the abovementioned objectives from both the artistic and professional point of view, in a long term collaboration that has six organisations at its core. We bring together young European musicians and look beyond their cultural diversity to find the common denominators that determine the success of an international career. We therefore bring together the experience of six organisations that are active on career development and export of their national artists.

⚠️ PART TWO OF THE CRISS CROSS EUROPE TOUR CANCELLED

Unfortunately we have to announce that the second leg of the 2021 tour will be cancelled. Due to corona, the circumstances were never ideal, but we are still extremely proud that we could organise a great residency and concerts in Estonia, Luxemburg and the Netherlands in October.

Since then, the situation has changed. We're dealing with a raging pandemic and because this is a truly international project, there are different measures for each participating country, some with a serious impact for touring musicians. Combined with the extremely high infections rates and all the extra complications for our musicians, we decided that is was no longer an option to go ahead.

We will, however, see whether moving the concerts to a later date might be an option. We will keep you updated.

AAAAAAaaannndd, here's the last one: Nabou Claerhout on trombone! See you next week for more news about Criss Cross Europe 2021!

Nabou Claerhout (°1993, Antwerp) is one of the most promising and innovative jazz trombonists of the Benelux. From an early age onwards, Nabou got the chance to play together with internationally renowned artists like Bert Joris, John Ruocco, Dave Holland and Dave Douglas. Her quartet N∆BOU and the band’s debut ep ‘Hubert’ (2019) made her one of the pillars of the new jazz generation in Belgium, both as a soloist, bandleader and composer. 2021 seems to become an exceptional year: she was picked as one of the ‘Twintigers’ (musicians below 30 to watch) by Klara (national radio). Besides that, she was also engaged to compose for a LOD (music theatre) production, became a member of MetX production : Les Sheikhs Shikhats & B’net Chaabi, was awarded the ‘Young Jazz Talent Award’ at the Ghent Jazz Festival (for a trombone ensemble to be presented in 2022) and will become an artist in residence at Antwerp venue Rataplan, where she can curate five nights.

On drums, here's Michel Meis 🥁

Drummer Michel Meis belongs to the new generation of Luxembourgish jazz musicians. He studied jazz drums with Oliver Strauch and Georg Ruby at the Hochschule für Musik Saar (Saarbrücken, Germany) and regularly proves his versatility and openness through numerous projects. Besides his own jazz project, the Michel Meis 4tet, he played for a long time with Dock in Absolute (pop/jazz) and currently plays with Everwaiting Serenade (melodic hardcore), Kleinkram (jazz), the Gilles Grethen Quartet (jazz) and the duo Blankx with pianist Manuel Krass (free jazz/electro). Meis played live in clubs and at festivals in Luxembourg, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, China and Japan.

On guitar, meet Chris Guilfoyle 🎸

Chris Guilfoyle is an Irish guitarist, composer, bandleader, and educator currently based in Dublin. Since 2011, Chris has been a member of faculty on Newpark Music Centre’s BA in Jazz Performance program, and has since become a Jazz Lecturer at Dublin City University. He is a founding member of the Dublin Jazz Co-op, a collective of Irish jazz musicians putting on weekly gigs in the Workman’s Club, Dublin. Chris leads his own group Umbra, a critically acclaimed quintet featuring some of the most promising musicians in Ireland. In his career, Chris has played with some of the biggest names in jazz including Dave Liebman, David Binney and Tom Rainey, and also performs with Ronan Guilfoyle, Conor Guilfoyle, Sean Carpio and Michael Buckley, some of the most highly regarded musicians on the Irish jazz scene.
