Strong regions, strong Europe. And b**r has a part to play.

As Europe marks the 2026 European Week of Regions and Cities, we are highlighting how brewing contributes to local economies and communities across the continent.

With around 10,000 breweries across the EU, from family-run businesses and microbreweries to major producers, b**r is deeply rooted in Europe’s regions. Breweries support local supply chains, create opportunities for hospitality businesses and help preserve centuries of brewing heritage.

Through **rTourism, visitors can discover historic breweries, explore local traditions and experience the places where b**r has shaped community life. Brewery tours and b**r festivals also bring visitors to smaller towns and rural areas, supporting local businesses beyond Europe’s traditional tourist destinations.

This is part of what **rIsMore stands for: recognising the economic and cultural contribution of brewing to the places where Europeans live and work.

Throughout **rMonth, we are celebrating these local connections and the role of Europe’s brewers in supporting the regions and communities at the heart of .

Nearly 10,000 breweries across the EU. One in every 12 b**rs sold is now alcohol-free.

These are among the figures shared in Strasbourg on 7 October, where The Brewers of Europe supported a reception organised by the European B**r Group, a cross-party network of MEPs from across Europe.

The reception, hosted by MEP Tomáš Zdechovský at the European Parliamentary Association in Strasbourg, offered a first preview of findings from our forthcoming Economic Impact Report, prepared by PwC and due to be published in early December. After five challenging years for European brewing, the report will provide an updated picture of the sector’s contribution to the EU economy.

As we celebrate European **rMonth, the occasion was also an opportunity to remind policymakers why **rIsMore than a drink, with a contribution that extends well beyond Europe’s breweries.

Thank you to the European B**r Group and its Co-Chairs, MEP Tomáš Zdechovský and MEP Hannes Heide, for bringing the discussion to Strasbourg.

B**r culture lives through the communities that keep its traditions alive.

On 1 October, around 200 guests gathered at the National Palace of Mafra in Portugal for the XXII Entronisation Ceremony of the Confraria da Cerveja, with our Secretary General Julia Leferman.

Under this year’s theme, “Ponto de Encontro” (Meeting Point), the Confraria celebrated b**r’s place in Portuguese culture and its close ties with gastronomy and tourism, while promoting moderation and responsibility. New members were also welcomed as B**r Ambassadors in Portugal.

It is a good example of what **rIsMore means across Europe: b**r is part of local traditions that communities continue to celebrate and pass on.

Congratulations to the Confraria da Cerveja and Cervejeiros de Portugal on the occasion.

October meant one thing for brewers: brewing could begin again!

For centuries in Bavaria, brewing followed the seasons. The 1516 Bavarian Purity Law already distinguished between the brewing periods before and after St George’s Day. In 1553, Albrecht V the Magnanimous went further, restricting brewing to the period between St Michael’s Day on 29 September and St George’s Day on 23 April. Brewers therefore made their last b**rs in March before the summer break. These stronger, more heavily hopped b**rs had to last through the warmer months, giving rise to the tradition of Märzen, literally “March b**r”.

Then came 29 September. Brewing could start again. So, historically, October was the first full month of a new brewing season. A fitting way to open European **rmonth.

And that brewing tradition is part of a much bigger European story today. B**r supports more than 2 million jobs across its value chain and contributes €52 billion in value to the European economy, from the farmers growing its ingredients to breweries and the hospitality sector. Throughout October, we’ll be sharing more of that story and showing why **rIsMore 🍻

Europe’s brewing sector generates around 8 million tonnes of spent grain and yeast every year. These by-products still contain valuable nutrients. What if more of them could be put to better use? ♻️

That was the idea behind LIFE BREWERY, an EU-funded project that ran from 2017 to 2021, coordinated by AZTI with The Brewers of Europe among its partners.

The project developed and tested a process to turn spent grain and yeast into new ingredients. Up to 75% of brewing by-products were recovered during the trials, resulting in six new ingredients, including four for aquaculture feed.

The aquaculture trials produced feeds containing 20% brewer’s yeast and 15% spent grain, while reducing fishmeal to 15%. Fish growth was comparable to that achieved with commercial feeds. The process was demonstrated at semi-industrial scale and designed so that it could be replicated in other European regions.

Through innovation, **rIsMore can also mean getting more from the resources that go into brewing. Giving spent grain and yeast a new purpose helps reduce resource use while creating new opportunities across Europe’s food value chain.

For the brewing sector, the starts with making more of what we already have.

The European Parliament adopts its report on the EU cardiovascular diseases strategy

The European Parliament Plenary today approved its report on the EU cardiovascular diseases strategy, unchanged from the draft adopted in the Parliament’s SANT health committee before the summer. In a comprehensive report that looks at issues such as early detection, treatment, primary care, inequalities, data, research and funding, The Brewers of Europe welcomes the Parliament’s emphasis, in the Prevention chapter, on tackling harmful alcohol consumption through targeted, evidence-based policies. Such an approach should also be taken in the European Parliament’s upcoming review of the Europe Beating Cancer Plan.

We particularly welcome the focus on information, education, communication and awareness-raising initiatives, The Brewers of Europe having published in April this year the latest figures showing that 95% of b**rs in Europe label ingredients and 91% label calories. We also welcome the Parliament’s recognition that effective health policies require a whole-of-society approach, bringing together public authorities, healthcare professionals, civil society, consumers and economic operators.

In a context where WHO and EU statistics show alcohol-attributable mortality, underage drinking and binge drinking all falling since 2010, Europe’s brewers play a constructive role through responsible marketing, consumer information, innovation in lower- and non-alcohol products, and initiatives that encourage moderation. We look forward to continuing our activities and engagement with policymakers and stakeholders in support of the shared objective to reduce harmful alcohol consumption and improve cardiovascular health across Europe.
