Loving these shapes. These pieces are already biscuit fired around 1000 degrees Celsius. Meaning they are now ceramic pieces, due to the chemical process of the high temperature their composition has changed and their shape are now permanent. However they still need glazing to give them the final colours and makes them hold fluids, since at this stage they are still very porous. After the next firing depending on the temperate, earthenware, below 1200°C or stoneware above 1200°C. Their molecular bond changes again making them even stronger and denser. Higher temperatures means denser ceramic.

Pretty happy with the result of my latest firing. I tweaked the mate cobalt glazing I used in my previous firing. By adding zirconium oxide ("adding white") to the glaze, it became a bit more pastel. In this image the blue appears oversaturated, though this is not the case. It's an effect of the glaze. I 'sprayed' the glaze, however as almost everything in ceramics it's quiet hard and I'm inexperienced in every field. This is the result of an uneven layer of glazing in the piece itself. Although I'm happy (lucky) how it turned out. On to the next experiment.

This came out of the today, a self-made test. There are two types of glaze, pre-fabricated glaze you can buy in a store, however you can also make your own. Just like baking a cake you put the ingredients together give it a good stir and your glaze is ready to go. In this test I used a matt- and gloss-cobalt glaze. In essence a glaze is a glass-like coating. The mix of used material gives the glaze it’s final look. For this glaze I used cobalt oxide to get the blue color. An oxide is a chemical compound that will always have a slightly different outcome as it undergoes a chemical reaction during the glaze-firing, where pigment colors are much more reliable to achieve a fluent color grading. Glazing is the last step in any , however it might also be the most daunting. Every is a little bit nervous when opening the kiln after a glaze-firing, it’s always a gamble how the glaze turned out.

A first attempt at Raku-firing. I would not use this technique on every pot, but it's definitely interesting to try out and experiment with it. And an experiment it was! Raku is very unpredictable because of the way this technique works.

It starts with a special type of clay and glaze that can withstand the temperature-shock. In a special (yet very simple) propane kiln the pottery is rapidly fired (in about an hour, regular firing takes about 6 to 8 hours) to roughly 1000gr Celcius. When the glaze is equally melted the kiln is opened and the work is transferred to a container filled with a flammable material (in this case wood chips). The material obviously catches fire and the real Raku process begins.

Because of rapid cooling of the pottery the glaze starts to crack and smoke from the burned material sets in these cracks resulting in unpredictable black lines. Also any unglazed parts which normally remain the colour of the clay, will be coloured black.

Last week progress. Focused on a new technique for centring the clay, took me a while to get the feeling right but after a few days I finally got the hang of it.

Fresh out of the kiln, my first time little vase, still so much to learn. Love how it still makes little sounds, produced by the release of tension on the glaze. To be continued.
