The department started its journey as "Bengal Survey" in 1767 in undivided India and conducted surveying and mapping activities until 1947. After the partition of the sub continent on 14th August 1947, `Survey of Pakistan’ was created and established its Deputy Surveyor General (DSG) office at Dhaka. This DSG’s office was transformed into `Survey of Bangladesh’ when Bangladesh immerged as an indep
endent state in 1971. Since then this organization has been continuing its activities with limited manpower and age old equipment. With the passage of time SOB has acquired remarkable progress in surveying and mapping activities. It has established a Digital Mapping Center, modern printing press and well equipped Geodetic Detachment. In order to determine Mean Sea Level (MSL) for the country, it has established a Tidal Station at Rangadia, Chittagong. It has also established national datum yard (vertical and horizontal) at Gulshan, Dhaka and a well defined network of geodetic control points all over the country. SOB extends his all-out support to other government, non-government agencies and private sectors of the country in their respective organizational and as well as national development planning. Presently it has transformed all its mapping processes into digital system and envisages to go ahead at par with other external mapping agencies of the world.
