A research study found that mid-career is a time where individuals particularly need help, especially when it comes to making decisions. Less than 50% of decisions made mid-career were rated as successful by study respondents. The other 50+% were most susceptible between the ages of 40 to 48 to making decisions that had less-than-successful outcomes, according to their own assessment. As individuals gain experience and skills, they get more responsibilities around enhancing the enterprise’s revenue, profitability, or brand reputation. But many people don’t realize this shift and instead play it safe, staying in the status quo and focusing on day-to-day performance. They put off decisions when they should be examining what needs to change. There are ways to break free of this trap. Mentorship can help individuals understand how successful people have made difficult decisions and pushed through change. Coaches, too, can provide valuable feedback to help managers see what’s holding them back and help to define a better value proposition for what they bring to the organization.

It’s a low point for work-related decision making.

Demonstrating passion is not the only predictor of a great job candidate, however hiring managers repeatedly reference this trait in their interview feedback — so you need to figure out how to convey what matters most to you. In your responses during interviews, rather than reference what you did, talk about why you chose to do it. Passion often lies in the activities you aren’t required to do, so talk about what you do with your extra time and why. Talk about your hobbies and how this passion flows into side projects. Talk about where you’ve worked for free. Don’t get overlooked during your next job interview because you don’t display the kind of full-throated, table-thumping behaviors companies tend to equate with passion. Show them that passion comes in different forms and yields impressive results — the kind of results you’ve already nailed.

Hobbies count.

You finally decide to start looking for a new job. You go through a lengthy search process, you’re presented with an enticing career opportunity, and get an offer you’re fully prepared to accept. But when you tell your current employer you’re planning to leave, they surprise you with a counteroffer. Should you take it? Tread carefully if you’re trying to boost your compensation. If you believe you are underpaid and you have no other compelling reason to leave, attempting to leverage an outside offer could backfire. You should also consider the possible consequences to your reputation. Executives in your current company may question your loyalty — even if you choose to stay — and colleagues may resent what they see as special treatment.

It’s usually — but not always — a bad idea.

Sigmund Freud is often quoted saying, a century ago, that to live a good life we need to be able to love and work. These days, it seems, we must be able to love to work. We no longer want just respect, security, or money from our jobs. We want passion, fulfillment, and surprise too. We want, in a word, romance. But what do you do when the romance has cooled? If it’s time to leave a job you’ve loved, think about what you need to let go of, and what you cannot leave behind. Then make sure you mourn the former, and take the latter with you. And as you go, let your job teach you one last thing: to savor loss. You will need it again. In the mobile workplace of our day and age, being able to move on is as important as being able to commit. It’s not enough to be able to love our jobs, then. We must also learn to leave them. And if loving well is hard, leaving well is harder still.

Reflect on what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown.

When thinking about how to develop in our careers, most of us tend to focus on promotions, projects, courses, certifications. We overlook one very key piece of the learning puzzle: proactively surrounding ourselves with people who will push us to succeed in unexpected ways and, in so doing, build genuinely rich, purposeful lives of growth, excellence, and impact. How can you do this? By thinking about the people who inspire you, aiming for a mix of those within and outside your organization, chasing them if need be, candidly explaining why you want to connect, asking for specific advice on how to get started, offering them your help, having crucial conversations in the right settings, and exploring big life questions with them.

Promotions, courses, and certifications will only take you so far.
