Deadly Yarns – Event Recap Post

What an incredible day it was. Deadly Yarns has officially wrapped up at Christie Downs Community Centre, and the energy in the room said it all.
The day opened with a Welcome to Country from Uncle Ivan, setting the tone for a day of connection, culture, and community.

168 people came through the doors, joined by 14 fantastic stakeholders who took the time to yarn, share what they do, and open up real conversations about future employment and training opportunities for our community. Add in great food and even better conversations, and it made for a truly deadly day.

A special mention to WISE Noarlunga Jessica Birch and the team, who came on board as Lead Provider for this event β€” thank you for your partnership and support in helping bring Deadly Yarns to life.

This is only the beginning. Stay posted for details on our next Deadly Yarns β€” you won't want to miss it.

STAKEHOLDER SPOTLIGHT πŸ’‘

We're proud to welcome Adelaide University to Deadly Yarns.

Through Wirltu Yarlu, Adelaide University's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unit, the University provides dedicated support for First Nations students from school through to graduation, including academic mentoring, an alternative Access Pathway into study, and a Cadetship Program linking study directly to real-world work experience across a wide range of host organisations.

Adelaide University's involvement in Deadly Yarns is a reminder that higher education is very much part of the employment pathway conversation, not separate from it.

We look forward to welcoming Adelaide University to the day.

STAKEHOLDER SPOTLIGHT πŸ’‘

We're pleased to welcome Gowrie SA and Turkindi Indigenous Network to Deadly Yarns.

Established in 1940, Gowrie SA is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation leading the development of innovative early childhood services, with a strong focus on cultural learning and reconciliation, guided by their Reconciliation Action Plan and a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment and cultural leadership within the sector.

Alongside them, Turkindi β€” the Indigenous Information Network of SA β€” connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service providers, educators, and training organisations, supporting communication and networking across South Australia's Indigenous employment and training sector.

Bringing together early childhood expertise and community connection, Gowrie SA and Turkindi Indigenous Network highlight the breadth of sectors and pathways represented at Deadly Yarns. Their involvement is a reminder that inclusive employment opportunities exist across many industries β€” not just the ones people expect.

We look forward to welcoming them to the event.

STAKEHOLDER SPOTLIGHT πŸ’‘

We're pleased to welcome AFL SportsReady to Deadly Yarns.

Through its Warumilang Program, AFL SportsReady offers dedicated First Nations traineeships and cadetships, pairing paid work experience with nationally recognised qualifications and the support of a First Nations mentor throughout the journey.

Their programs span school-based traineeships, direct employment, and university cadetships, giving young people a genuine, well-supported start to their careers.

AFL SportsReady's involvement in Deadly Yarns highlights the value of purpose-built, culturally safe pathways that meet young people exactly where they are in their journey.

We look forward to welcoming AFL SportsReady to the day.

STAKEHOLDER SPOTLIGHT πŸ’‘

We're pleased to welcome Coles Group to Deadly Yarns.

Coles has built a long-standing commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment, growing from just 65 Indigenous team members in 2010 to now one of the largest private-sector employers of First Nations people in Australia.

Their Reconciliation Action Plan continues to drive tailored pre-employment and graduate programs, alongside partnerships that create direct pathways from the classroom into meaningful work.

Coles' presence at Deadly Yarns reflects the kind of sustained, long-term investment in Indigenous employment that creates lasting change, not just short-term outcomes.

We look forward to welcoming Coles to the day.

SYC is South Australia's only First Nations Specialist Apprentice Connect Provider, offering free, tailored support across more than 500 occupations to help First Nations apprentices and their employers succeed throughout the apprenticeship journey.

With over 65 years of experience supporting apprentices and employers, and having helped more than 7,000 people into employment last year alone, SYC brings deep expertise in turning training into lasting careers.

Their involvement in Deadly Yarns reflects the kind of specialised, hands-on support that helps apprenticeships stick, not just start.

We look forward to welcoming SYC to the day.

STAKEHOLDER SPOTLIGHT πŸ’‘

We're proud to welcome Woolworths Noarlunga to Deadly Yarns.

As part of one of Australia's largest employers, Woolworths brings the backing of a national Reconciliation Action Plan into our local community β€” one guided by a First Nations Advisory Board and a genuine commitment to growing First Nations representation across the business. It's a great example of what's possible when a national commitment translates into a real, local presence.

Having the local store involved means Deadly Yarns isn't just connecting community with distant head office programs β€” it's connecting people with an employer just down the road.

We look forward to welcoming the Woolworths Noarlunga team to the day.
