GOLD JOBS
SRG Global has received a three-year drill-and-blast services contract with Evolution Mining at several of its Australian gold mines.
The scope of the agreement includes Evolution’s Mount Rawdon and Mount Carlton mines in Queensland, and its Cowal open pit mine in New South Wales.
The SRG Global existing fleet will be mobilized to attend the sites with minimal growth capital required over the contract term, according to SRG Global.
SRG Global has secured other prominent mining and oil and gas contracts in the last six months, including a $20 million contract for drilling works at BHP
Mitsubishi Alliance’s Blackwater coal mine in Queensland with Downer, and a four-year scaffolding contract at Woodside Energy’s North West Shelf
project in Western Australia.

THE NEW MINING JOBS
Recruitment agency Hays has revealed the mining skills most in demand in 2019.
In Western Australia, the high levels of activity have drained the supply of skilled professionals once more.
The WA Chamber of Minerals and Energy predicts 20,000 local jobs will be created next financial year, with Pilbara the hotspot.
“With BHP, Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group all building new mines at the same time, which together require thousands of construction workers in Western Australia, the pressure is on to attract top talent,” Hays explained.
“Unlike the last boom however, where bidding wars led to inflated salaries, this time employers are unlikely to compete for staff based on salary alone.”
Hays reported that the reawakening of Queensland’s mining industry over the past 12 months had created strong demand for professionals.
“As candidate shortages intensify, skilled professionals are aware of the demand for their skills. In order to remain competitive and attract the top talent, employers are offering more flexible working rosters, relocation packages and allowances,” Hays stated.

180 NSW MINING JOBS
China Molybdenum Company and Sumitomo have approved the development of a new block cave mine to expand the Northparkes Mines copper-gold operation in New South Wales.
The $200 million, three-and-a-half-year project will start this month and is expected to reach full production in mid-2022.
It is forecast to produce around 40 million tonnes of ore over a 10-year period once operational.
The project will involve 11 kilometres of underground development, an underground primary crusher, conveying systems and associated infrastructure.
Northparkes will employ up to 180 people, including a mix of employees and contractors, at the peak of project construction.

MINING WORKERS NEEDED
An increasing skills shortage is threatening to adversely impact on billions of dollars in mining and resources investment, prompting industry leaders to call on the WA Government to relax its restrictions on overseas workers.
Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA chief executive Chris Rodwell warned the recovering WA economy “will grind to a halt” without an influx of skilled labor, while the head of a national recruitment firm said the number of Pilbara vacancies was already in the hundreds and growing every week.
More than $75 billion of new WA mining and resources projects are poised to create tens of thousands of jobs over the next few years but with apprenticeships and traineeships both in decline, there is no one to fill them.

AUSTRALIAN LITHIUM
The Australian Government looks ready to play a part in helping the country capitalize on its potential as a manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries.
Western Australia now has seven producing lithium mines after Altura Mining opened its Pilgangoora operation in the Pilbara during September.
The state accounts for around half of global lithium supply, guided by the Greenbushes mine in the South West region, the world’s largest operation.
Despite dominating this part of the supply chain, plans to use local lithium for battery manufacturing purposes have been limited.
The Australian Government has, however, indicated it will now help to maximize this potential as a lithium-ion battery manufacturer.
This week Austrade’s Lithium-ion Battery Value Chain strategy was launched showing Australia is well positioned to become a world leader in this developing market.
It is at least 10 per cent cheaper to convert spodumene (which is mined in Western Australia) to lithium hydroxide than the brine mined in South America.
It is time Australia took advantage of the booming lithium industry.
Lithium prices have tripled since 2010 and global battery consumption is predicted to increase five-fold in the next 10 years, driven by a global shift to electric vehicles in some markets and off-grid storage to support renewable energy development.

ZINC JOBS
Sun Metals Corporation will deliver hundreds of jobs to Queensland following state government approval of a $300 million expansion to its refinery near Townsville.
Sun Metals owner Korea Zinc Company will invest $300 million in the refinery, enabling an increase to annual production of 50,000 tonnes to 270,000 tonnes.
About 30 per cent of the site’s electricity needs will be provided by a $200 million solar farm opened by Sun Metals in August.
To enable this, around 350 jobs are expected to be filled during construction of the expansion, followed by another 100 permanent operational jobs once the expansion is completed in the first half of 2021.

COAL MINING JOBS
Adani has accelerated its search for employees to support the Carmichael mine and rail project in Queensland following the announcement that the development is now funded.
The Indian company has this week been seeking expressions of interest for roles such as civil construction superintendents and engineers, earthmoving equipment operators, and health and safety professionals.
Most of the roles are based in the Queensland cities of Mackay and Rockhampton, reflecting Adani’s regional content strategy for the project.
Adani’s recruitment ramp up follows last week’s announcement that it would start development of Carmichael before Christmas.

IRON ORE JOBS
Rio Tinto is on track to begin construction of the Koodaideri iron ore mine in the Pilbara, Western Australia next year after approving an AUD $3.5 billion investment in the project.
The miner plans to start production at Koodaideri, around 35 kilometres from its Yandicoogina iron ore site, in late 2021.
With an estimated capacity of 43 million tonnes a year, it is poised to become Rio Tinto’s next major Pilbara hub and will integrate extensive automation and digitization technologies.
The project is also set to increase the higher-value lump component of Rio Tinto’s Pilbara Blend by around 3 per cent to 38 per cent at a capital spend of roughly $60/t.
Rio Tinto has emphasized a ‘value over volume’ approach to Koodaideri, delivering low-cost, high-quality iron ore to overseas markets, particularly China.
Its phase one construction works will include mine infrastructure, support facilities, accomodation, road access, rail spur and an airport.
Koodaideri is expected to create over 2000 construction jobs and 600 permanent operational jobs over its 30-year lifespan.

MINERAL SANDS JOBS
SIMPEC has been awarded a $1.7 million contract by Iluka Resources for its mineral sands development at Cataby in Western Australia.
SIMPEC’s new agreement with Iluka will see it install a flocculant treatment plant, which includes the fabrication and construction of four tanks over a period of three months. The contractor will also be in charge of structural, mechanical and piping works.
The flocculant plant will form part of Iluka’s mineral and chemical processing facility at Cataby.
The Cataby mineral sands deposit, 150 kilometres north of Perth, is a chloride ilmenite deposit with associated zircon and rutile production. It will commence production in June 2019.

Evolution Mining has greenlit an expansion to the Cowal gold processing plant in New South Wales 12 months ahead of plan.
The Cowal plant has been in operation since 2006 and currently has an annual ore processing capacity of 7.5 million tonnes. In the 2018 financial year it produced 258,000 ounces of gold.
The expansion, scheduled to start in the March 2019 quarter, is expected to cost between $25-30 million and will increase the plant’s annual capacity by 1.2 million tonnes to 8.7 million tonnes.
Evolution expects to begin commissioning of the upgraded plant a year later in the March 2020 quarter.
