π R U OK? DAY β A CONVERSATION CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING
Today, Skillforce Recruitment is asking three very simple words:
R U OK?
Three little words that can open a conversation, create a moment of connection and, sometimes, make an extraordinary difference to someone who is struggling.
Mental health struggles aren't always visible.
The person sitting beside you at work may be struggling.
The friend who always makes everyone laugh may be struggling.
The person who says, βI'm fine,β may be carrying more than anyone realises.
Depression can be incredibly isolating, and when someone is experiencing emotional pain that feels unbearable, they may struggle to see a way forward.
Su***de doesn't just leave an empty space. It leaves families, friends, colleagues and communities trying to make sense of something that can never truly make sense.
The grief can be overwhelming.
The questions can be endless.
And the words βI wish I had knownβ can stay with people for the rest of their lives.
That is why checking in matters.
You don't need to have the perfect words.
You don't need to be able to fix someone's problems.
You simply need to care enough to ask.
R U OK?
And when you ask, take the time to genuinely listen.
Sometimes, being heard can be the first step towards seeking help.
Sometimes, knowing that someone cares can make someone feel a little less alone.
And sometimes, one conversation can change the course of a life.
For those of us who have experienced the devastating impact of su***de, days like today carry a particularly heavy meaning. We know that there are no guarantees, and that sometimes even when we love someone with everything we have, we cannot save them.
But we can keep talking.
We can keep checking in.
We can keep reminding people that asking for help is not weakness.
And we can make sure that nobody feels they have to suffer in silence.
So today, Skillforce Recruitment encourages everyone to look around.
Check on your workmate.
Call your friend.
Message your family member.
Ask the person who has been a little quieter than usual.
Ask them:
R U OK?
And if the answer isn't βyesβ, don't be afraid of the conversation.
Stay.
Listen.
Care.
Help them find support.
Because if one conversation helps one person reach out, hold on, or take that next step towards helpβ¦
then that conversation matters.
