This week, CCGT’s Alison, Melanie and Chanel enjoyed an Evening of Spices, Stories & Connections at the Central Coast Industry Connect Women in Manufacturing event. Featuring special guest Ian Hemphill, founder of local food manufacturing icon Herbie’s Spices, the evening brought together local manufacturers over an array of delicious Herbie's spice-infused canapés made by Liz Hemphill (the mushroom pâté and chocolate wattleseed biscuits were stand-outs!).
To kick off his spice appreciation session, Ian shared a few thoughts on why manufacturing is such a special industry to him. Taking raw products and turning them into something new, valuable and essential is pretty incredible.
Ian then took us on a journey through the history of spices, how they're produced and how to use them in everyday cooking. Hot tip: if you don't like chilli, don't just leave it out! Swap fresh chilli for capsicum or chilli powder for sweet paprika to keep the flavour without the heat. Fun fact: One reason coriander leaves are so polarising is that coriander and stink bugs share some of the same chemical compounds!
Alison and Melanie also had the chance to give guests an update on our ManufactHER project, including some of the fantastic progress participating businesses are making. From growing leadership confidence and capability to creating new, flexible roles on the factory floor, there's plenty happening, and we can't wait to share more of their stories as the project continues.
Here's to new connections, more spice and more women in manufacturing! 🌶️
A big thank you to Alex Blow and Central Coast Industry Connect for bringing everyone together, and to Ian and Liz Hemphill for such a fun and delicious evening!
