Non‑destructive digging (NDD) plays a crucial role in reducing environmental impact across civil and utility works. By using vacuum excavation instead of mechanical digging, we minimise ground disturbance, protect underground assets, and reduce waste on every project.

On World Environment Day, we’re proud to highlight how NDD supports cleaner, safer and more sustainable excavation practices across NSW.

Our commitment to environmental responsibility is backed by our ISO 14001 Environmental Management certification, ensuring our systems, decisions and on‑site practices consistently meet international standards for environmental care.

Safe. Sustainable. ISO 14001 certified.

🔬 How do you safely land a new power transformer onto a concrete plinth — before the crane even moves?

That was the challenge at this substation, where our team was engaged to support our esteemed Client during the installation of a new substation transformer.

Our Client had already constructed the concrete plinth — but before the transformer was placed, there was a critical question: does the as-built plinth actually match the design, and will everything fit?

📋 Scope:

3D laser scan of the as-built concrete plinth to verify it against design
3D laser scan of the incoming transformer on arrival to site
Digital twin created by merging both datasets in Trimble Business Center, then reviewed in Trimble Connect
Both the plinth and the transformer were scanned using a Trimble terrestrial laser scanner. The point cloud data was processed and the two digital models were overlaid — giving us a virtual installation to interrogate on screen before any crane operation began.

🔍 What the digital twin revealed:

The transformer base and plinth were a very tight fit ✅
A clash was identified between the concrete pedestal and the transformer's cables ⚠️
With that information confirmed on screen, the project team made a clear, informed decision: cut down the pedestal before the transformer was lifted into place.

✅ Outcome:

Clash resolved prior to lift operations
Transformer successfully installed as per design
This is the value of spatial data in construction. Decisions that could have been reactive — costly and risky — were made proactively, on the ground, with confidence.

"Scan. Model. Verify. Then build with confidence."

👏 Employee of the Month – January / February

Congratulations to Jack Lawrence, our URD Electrical Manager, on being awarded Employee of the Month for January / February. 🏆⚡

Jack continues to play a key role across our URD electrical projects, showing strong leadership, commitment, and dedication to delivering quality outcomes for both our clients and teams on site, and it was also recognized by one of our key clients during a difficult outage in which everything ran smooth and the client had power turned on all as planned.

Proud to see Road & Rail Excavations featured in Earthmovers & Excavators magazine for our work on Sydney’s Warringah Freeway Upgrade.

From complex utility relocations to deep excavations and bulk earthworks, this project highlights our team’s ability to deliver safely and efficiently under challenging conditions—working alongside live traffic and within tight site constraints.

With around 250,000 vehicles using this corridor every day, it’s a privilege to contribute to infrastructure that will improve traffic flow and support the region’s future growth.
A great reflection of the capability, planning, and teamwork across everyone involved.
