The University of Newcastle’s surveying program is at a critical point.

Following a pause on new enrolments in 2026 due to low uptake under the previous delivery model, ISNSW has been working closely with the University to advocate for a sustainable pathway forward.

The University of Newcastle has now confirmed plans to develop a revised hybrid Bachelor of Surveying (Honours), targeted for launch in 2027, subject to final approvals.

The proposed new model combines flexible learning with in-person field intensives and a curriculum aligned with current technologies, workflows and accreditation requirements.

The aim is to create a more accessible and sustainable pathway into the profession, particularly for regional students and those balancing work alongside study.

The redesigned program is expected to:
• improve accessibility for regional students
•enable students to work while studying
• strengthen engagement between students and industry
• maintain rigorous field training and work-ready outcomes
• support the future surveying workforce pipeline at a time of ongoing skills shortages across NSW and Australia

To support the program through its establishment phase, the University is seeking a collective industry contribution of $50,000 per year over five years.

We are seeking industry contributions of $5,000 to $20,000 annually over five years. Contributions at any level are welcome, with all funds directed specifically to the surveying program.

Without a sustainable surveying program at the University of Newcastle, NSW risks losing its only regionally based surveying degree pathway at a time when the profession continues to face significant workforce shortages.

If your organisation may be interested in contributing, please pledge your support: https://forms.office.com/r/BpkXUT2Kgz
