We welcome the appointment by The Hon Anika Wells MP (Minister for Communications and Minister for Sport) of Dr Nicholas Pappas AM as the new Chairperson of Special Broadcasting Service (SBS).

Challis & Company was pleased to yet again support the independent Nomination Panel and the Department of infrastructure Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts on this appointment.

We first worked on SBS Board appointments in 2016 and—over the past decade—have been involved in appointing many well-regarded Non-Executive Directors, including former Chairpersons Hass Dellal AO and George Savvides AM; the current Deputy Chair Christine Zeitz, as well as the new Chair.

With Darren Challis's recent retirement, this sadly brings to a close our work supporting appointments to the Board of SBS—an important national institution reflecting Australia’s multicultural society and First Nations peoples.

Challis & Company is partnering with IP Australia on the appointment of two Board members to the Trans-Tasman IP Attorneys Board. The Board administers the regulatory and disciplinary regimes for patent attorneys in Australia and NZ, and trade marks attorneys in Australia.

To fully meet the Board’s remit requires a diversity of perspectives and experience. The Australian Government is looking for individuals with:

(a) substantial experience or knowledge; and
(b) significant standing,

in at least one of the following fields:

(c) Australian patent attorney practice;
(d) Australian trade mark attorney practice;
(e) the regulation of persons engaged in a prescribed occupation;
(f) public administration;
(g) academia.

Alternative backgrounds that may be considered include:

(h) the legal profession;
(i) the innovation, commercialisation and technology sectors that drive the IP system; and
(j) tertiary education accreditation and quality processes.

The ideal candidate will bring commercial and operational acumen, alongside a deep appreciation for the role of the performing arts in public life. An understanding of opera—or a genuine curiosity and willingness to engage with its artistic and cultural dimensions—is essential. The CEO must be able to connect authentically with artists, audiences, funders and stakeholders, and bring clarity, conviction and credibility to a role that sits at the intersection of culture, community and commerce.
