Retaining employees is one of the most important factors in the success of any business. In fact, research has shown that the cost of replacing an employee can be as much as 20% of their annual salary.

Therefore, it's essential to understand what motivates your employees and how they can be retained so you can make sure they're happy at work. Here are 5 of the best strategies to focus on in 2023:

1. Seek out (and act on) feedback
Employees are a company’s biggest asset, so it’s important that they feel they can give feedback without feeling judged or singled out. Having an open culture where employees can freely express their ideas will help increase productivity and innovation.

2. Recognise your employees
Recognition is one of the most effective ways to retain top talent in any industry, but especially in FMCG where turnover rates tend to be higher than other industries. Giving employees recognition for their work not only increases morale but also helps build trust between managers and staff members.

3. Offer flexible work options
Flexible work options allow employees to work from home or remotely when needed which can greatly reduce employee stress levels if they have children at home or another reason why working from home would be more beneficial than working from the office every day. This will also help reduce absenteeism since people won’t feel as though they need to take time off if there are urgent matters back home that need attending too!

4. Invest in technology
New technologies are being introduced all the time, and they can be a huge asset for your company's growth and success. Employees like to feel like they're learning new things and growing, so investing in tech that allows them to do this will help them feel more invested in the company overall.

5. Strengthen training programs
Training programs are a crucial part of retaining employees in the FMCG industry.

It is important to provide employees with the knowledge and skills they need to do their jobs, but it is equally important to offer them opportunities for growth. Training programs should be designed in such a way that they not only provide new information and skills, but also allow for personal growth and development.

Training should be ongoing, so that employees have access to new information and skills as they become relevant or necessary. The training process should be well-planned and organised so that employees can easily find what they need when they need it, whether it's new information about a product or process, or something more general like managing time effectively or communicating with others at work.

When an executive suddenly departs, it can be a very stressful time for the company. There are many things that need to be done in order to keep operations going, and if you're not careful, you may end up losing key employees. Here are four things you should do when an executive suddenly departs:

1. Assess the impact of the departure on the business. At this point, you may need to turn to a third party for help because you may not have all of the necessary information available internally. Even if you do have all of the information internally, it is often helpful to have an external perspective on how your organisation will be impacted by an executive departure or other management change situations as well as how your competitors might be affected by such changes within their own organisations.

2. Make a plan – Sudden departures can be incredibly disruptive. Make a plan for what steps need to be taken to maintain business operations and minimise disruptions and what responsibilities and aspects of their role can be delegated to other team members. Having a succession plan that you can fall back on can help ease the stress of the situation and provide some level of contingency.

3. Communicate effectively – Don't let the departure of one person cause a mass exodus of talent from your company—make sure that you let everyone know that they're valued and appreciated. Honest communication with your employees about what's happening and how any sudden departure will impact their role and position within the organisation is critical in maintaining trust and diffusing the situation.

4. Take Action – If the person who departed was instrumental in running critical aspects of the business, then engaging with and executive search firm who can help you find qualified leadership talent to step into their shoes quickly and minimise disruptions in operations will ease the pressure. It also pays to be open minded in the process – the appointment of an interim executive to steady the ship until a full time replacement can be found might not be ideal but can provide much needed stability, perspective and expertise in a challenging situation.

In the face of rapid digitisation, companies have been left scrambling to find leadership talent that is digitally savvy.

The need for cyber security threats has never been higher and cyber resilience has become a top priority for many organisations. Cyber security is an imposing term and keeps many executives awake at night as we recently saw with the Optus Data Breach.

One small hole could allow a bad actor to infect a network, decrease productivity, steal sensitive data or threaten a corporation to pay ransom for the release of their systems.

Unfortunately, all companies have significant exposure to cyber threats and the easiest way to gain access to a network is through an unexpecting user. Cyber readiness, risk audits, training and technology fortification are all in play for next year.

It's never been more crucial for organisations to invest in digitally savvy leadership talent who can help mitigate the risk of cyber security threats and whilst helping organisations become digital first.

Hiring executive talent is a delicate process that needs careful, expert management. If you are looking to build a high-performing culture, you need to hire the best people in their fields.

This can be difficult, which is why more and more organisations are turning to executive search firms for help.

Here are the top 4 things companies look for in an executive search firm:

1. Extensive expertise in your industry

To find a qualified leader for your company, you need an executive search team with expertise specific to your industry. A vertical-focused search firm will match you with senior partners and team members who understand what it takes from a talent perspective to drive success and growth in your vertical.

2. Confidentiality and Discretion

Today's volatile political and economic landscape means organisations value discretion and confidentiality. Executive Search firms help to mitigate the risk of both internal and external factors influencing the hiring process.

3. Thorough recruitment processes

Making an executive hire can have a profound impact on an organisation, therefore a well-defined strategy, and a thorough, in-depth process is critical in not only identifying the best executive talent who meets your specific needs but ensuring the alignment of values and culture.

4. Credibility & strong, far-reaching networks

To find the top-performing executive talent in your industry—the thought leaders, the trailblazers, the individuals currently heading the companies you aspire to be—your executive search team must have the networks to identify them and the credibility to engage them.
