Throwback Thursday... Blugibbon Creation Week 💙

This week takes me back 14 years, when we first came up with the idea for Blugibbon: a recruitment business that would stand up for doctors and do things differently.

We wanted to build something personal and relationship-led, a business that put doctors first, gave honest advice, did the right thing and stayed in it for the long game. The goal was simple: help deliver world-class doctors to communities that need them, while making every person we work with feel genuinely looked after.

This photo is from our first conference, SMACC Dublin, with my best mate Will, who I roped in to help bring the idea to life. We were finding our feet, meeting brilliant people and having a lot of fun along the way.

Those early values still matter to us today: energy, ethics, skill, attitude, innovation, adding value and looking out for each other. We’ve always believed in building lasting relationships, taking opportunities and leaving a positive impression.

Fourteen years on, I’m proud of what Blugibbon has become and grateful to every doctor, client and teammate who’s been part of the journey.

Why does everyone moving to Australia automatically look East?

Sydney. Melbourne. Brisbane.

All great.

But I reckon UK and Irish doctors are seriously overlooking Western Australia.

Direct flights home ✈️
Sunshine ☀️
Beaches that are frankly ridiculous 🏖️
Margaret River 🍷
Great hospitals 🏥
Plenty of work 👨‍⚕️
And a bloody big state to explore 🌏

And here’s the thing I’ve noticed after 20 years around medical recruitment…

Everyone who goes to WA seems to bloody LOVE WA.

So I made a quick video on why I reckon doctors should stop overlooking the West.

🤖 **1. AI + MEDICARE**
An AI agent accessed an Australian Government Medicare statistics portal, including non-public aggregate health data. No evidence of individual Medicare records being accessed — but a pretty big warning about AI and healthcare cybersecurity.

🌏 **2. WE NEED INTERNATIONAL DOCTORS**
An ABC report highlighted that **59% of Australian GPs were born overseas**. Another reminder of just how important international doctors are to the Australian healthcare system.

👩‍⚕️ **3. 950 MORE NURSES**
NSW is recruiting another **950 nurses across 70 hospitals**, as minimum staffing levels expand across more than 360 wards.

🚑 **4. ED PRESSURE**
The doctors' union reported **13–14 hour waits** at Adelaide's Lyell McEwin Hospital, with the SA Government announcing another 20 beds to help relieve pressure.

🏥 **5. $630M HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT**

**My takeaway?**

AI is moving quickly. Hospitals are getting bigger. But the recurring story is still **WORKFORCE** — getting enough doctors and nurses into the right places.

Anthony Albanese says he has spoken to the Open AI chief executive to express his concern about the incident and the length of time it took the tech company to inform the government of the breach.

🏥 MEDICAL MONDAY 14th Sept 26' | Are GPs being penalised for spending more time with patients?

This week I’m looking at a major review of Medicare and the way GP consultations are funded in Australia.

The review found that the current rebate structure can actually reward shorter appointments more generously than longer consultations — despite patients increasingly presenting with more complex health issues.

One recommendation is to increase Medicare rebates for GP appointments lasting more than 20 minutes.

For me, the interesting question is simple:

If we want better primary care, shouldn’t we make it easier for doctors to spend the right amount of time with their patients?

I share a few thoughts in this week’s Medical Monday.
