Today we launched the VBench Jobseeker Hub. 🩷

A free platform built for the people we can't always place - but who still deserve real support.

Every week, we spend as much time as we can giving advice to jobseekers and with VBench we can now offer that support to a far wider network!

The advice needed is consistent. The main questions are usually similar. And there was never a good way to scale this help to as many people as we would like and give it away for free.

Now there is.

The Jobseeker Hub gives you:
- CV review and optimisation tools
- Positioning and personal branding guidance
- Application tailoring
- Interview question preparation
- Personality trait profiling - and how to use it in a job search
- A complete training pathway covering every stage

Free to use. Built to actually help.

At some point we will need to charge for an optional upgrade and advanced AI tooling - But right now we are giving this free to the first 500 sign-ups too!

All you need to do is anonymously contribute to the salary guide and you get full access to every tool at no cost. Your data is private, not shared, and deletable at any time.

Some tools are still in beta - if you find an issue or have a suggestion, reach out. This platform was built to give back and we'll keep making it better.

Here's what the Australian tech hiring market actually looks like right now.

The headline: hiring has cooled, but it hasn't stopped.

Job vacancies are down. Online ads are lower than a year ago. Employers are taking longer to decide and being more deliberate about who they bring on.

But here's what that actually means on the ground.

Specialist skills are still hard to find. Time-to-hire in technical roles remains elevated. The candidate pool for niche disciplines hasn't grown - it's just that the competition for each role has.

In 2026, hiring is precision-led. Businesses are recruiting fewer people but expecting greater impact from each hire. Technical competency is assumed. What separates candidates now is relevance and communication.

For employers: the window to move on a strong candidate is shorter than you think. Deliberate doesn't mean slow.

For candidates: generalist experience is a harder sell. Niche expertise commands both faster placement and stronger offers.

This is the market. If you're hiring in the next 90 days - this is worth a conversation.

What actually happens after you accept the counter-offer.

Most people find out the hard way.

Here's what the data and 15+ years in tech recruitment consistently show.

Trust erodes.

You've demonstrated you were willing to leave and that you'd been actively looking. Your employer knows it. Whether it's said or not, that changes how you're managed, how you're developed, and how visible you become when the next round of restructures arrives.

The original problems resurface.

A pay rise doesn't fix a toxic team dynamic. It doesn't update a tech stack that hasn't evolved since 2018. It doesn't make an uninspiring leader suddenly inspiring. The problems were always going to come back.

Your market value stagnates.

You spend another 12-18 months in a role you already decided wasn't right. The skills you would have built in a new environment don't accrue. The network you would have grown doesn't grow. The peers who made the move are now ahead.

Most professionals who accept counter-offers are back on the market within a year. More frustrated, more burned out, and more behind than if they'd made the move when they had the momentum.

Counter-offers are a speed bump dressed up as a resolution.

If you're working through this decision right now, we've written a detailed piece on The Counter-Offer Trap - link in the comments.

And if you want to talk it through honestly, reach out. No pressure, no agenda.

Every few months, someone in Silicon Valley announces we are close to AGI. Or already there.

OpenAI's Chief Research Officer says they're "80% of the way there." Jensen Huang declared we've achieved AGI - then immediately walked it back. Sam Altman acknowledged "AGI has become a very sloppy term."

So what is actually going on?

Lee Margerum from Talent Aligned has written an honest, no-fluff breakdown of why the AGI narrative keeps shifting - and what it actually means for businesses planning their teams right now.

The pizza test alone is worth the read. If AI can't reliably order you a pizza from start to finish, are we really 80% of the way to AGI?

We'd love to hear where your community sits on this. Is the hype justified? Or is this financial storytelling dressed up as technical progress?

I've watched this play out hundreds of times.

A candidate goes through the whole process. Interviews well. Gets excited about the new role. Hands in their notice.

Then the counter-offer lands.

More money. A title. A promise.

And I get the call: "I'm thinking about staying."

I never tell them to reject it automatically.

What I do tell them is this.

Your employer isn't making that offer because they suddenly realised your worth. They're making it because losing you right now is expensive and disruptive. That is a different thing.

Replacing a mid-to-senior tech professional in Sydney costs three to six months of salary when you factor in agency fees, internal time, and onboarding. If you're deep in a delivery cycle, the cost is even higher.

Counter-offers are short-term risk management dressed up as recognition.

The moment you hand in your notice, the relationship changes. You've shown your hand. Whether anyone says it out loud or not, you're now perceived differently - in how you're managed, how you're developed, how visible you become when the next restructure comes around.

So I always come back to the same three questions:

What made you start looking in the first place?
Would you genuinely be excited to stay - or just guilty enough to?
What does your gut already know?

Most people have the answer before they sit down to "think it over." The counter-offer just creates noise.

If you're in this situation right now and want a straight conversation about it - no agenda, no pressure - reach out.

The counter-offer felt like a win.

Six months later, they were back on the market.

This is the pattern we see, again and again, in Australian tech recruitment.

The pay rise gets accepted. The underlying problems - the uninspiring manager, the stagnant tech stack, the culture that never quite fit - they don't go anywhere.

And the relationship? It changes the moment you hand in your notice.

You've shown your hand. Whether anyone says it out loud or not, the question mark over your commitment doesn't disappear. It just goes quiet for a while.

Counter-offers are rarely about you. They're about disruption, cost, and timing.

The new role you walked away from? That employer moved on. They offered it to the second candidate that same week.

The link to our full article on The Counter-Offer Trap is in our bio - worth a read if you're navigating this right now.

The biggest killer of offer acceptance isn't money.

It's silence.

Between interview and offer, candidates are left alone with their thoughts. Doubt creeps in. The counter-offer suddenly sounds more appealing. The new role feels like a risk.

And nobody from the agency has called.

Silence creates anxiety. Anxiety creates dropouts.

The recruiter's job during that window is to bridge the gap. Weekly check-ins. Keeping the excitement alive. Being the voice that says "you're making the right call."

If your recruiter goes quiet after your interview - you deserve better.
