Doctors considering locum work often hear very different stories about the market.

But what's the reality? 🤔

Over the past few years, many doctors have noticed shifts in how the locum landscape operates. Discussions across medical forums frequently highlight themes like:

increasing competition, changes to locum budgets within some public health systems, and variations in demand between states.

At the same time, one thing that has remained consistent is that many regional hospitals still rely heavily on locum doctors to maintain essential services. For doctors who approach locum work by staying organised, responsive, and flexible with location, opportunities remain strong.

At Prescript, we spend every day helping doctors navigate these shifts and identify placements that align with both their clinical interests and career goals.

What changes have you noticed in the locum market over the past few years?

Australia is currently short around 2,400 full-time equivalent GPs. Projections suggest that the number could grow to 8,900 by 2048.

When workforce pressure intensifies, emergency departments feel it first.

For Care 24-7, a national specialist delivering 24/7 emergency care in regional Australia, the response was to strengthen leadership.

Workforce challenges of this scale require careful matching, high standards and a recruitment process that reduces risk for both doctors and health services.
This is not transactional recruitment.

Locum accommodation is one of the biggest unknowns we hear about and one of the easiest things to misunderstand.

Some doctors assume they’ll have no say. Others worry they’ll be sharing or living far from work. Many don’t even ask about partners, family or pets because they assume the answer is no.

Most placements include accommodation, often self-contained.

What makes the difference is having someone clarify the details early, advocate where possible, and be upfront when options are limited.

We understand that where you stay affects how you work, rest, and show up, especially on placement.

Let us handle the hard work for you: https://prescript.com.au/contact

Thinking about a move into rural medicine?

For many doctors across Australia, rural roles are becoming some of the most rewarding careers in healthcare. With broader clinical experience, closer connections with patients, and the chance to make a real impact in communities that need it most, it’s easy to see why so many clinicians fall in love with it.

Rural medicine isn’t for everyone, but for the right doctor, it can offer meaningful work, strong career progression, and a lifestyle that’s hard to replicate in the city.

On Sunday, there were many posts celebrating women in medicine.

Today feels like a good moment to talk about what it actually takes to become one.

Dr Noor Ridha is now a Consultant Radiologist, but the path to getting there wasn’t always easy.

Like many doctors going through specialty training, she describes it as one of the most stressful periods of her career. The expectations are high, and there’s often a pressure to constantly prove yourself, particularly for women who tend to carry an enormous amount of responsibility and self-expectation.

Despite working incredibly hard and achieving a fellowship, Dr Noor admits that imposter syndrome still crept in. There were moments where the pressure pushed her mental well-being close to its limits, something many doctors experience but don’t always feel comfortable talking about.

Supporting doctors isn’t just about placing someone in a role. For us, it’s about advocating for careers that are sustainable, flexible and genuinely supported by the organisations they work within.

Many doctors hesitate to raise questions because they care about starting well.

However, unclear expectations rarely resolve themselves once a role begins. More often, they shape workload, flexibility, and long-term satisfaction.

Negotiation isn’t about leverage. It’s about clarity. We explore this in depth in our latest blog, including the contract areas doctors often overlook and how thoughtful conversations early can protect both sides.

Over time, even the most capable doctors can find their work becoming narrower than they expected.

Broken Hill changed that.

Through RFDS outreach and retrieval work, hospital and GP clinics, Aboriginal Medical Services, and true rural generalist practice, doctors here are asked to draw on the full breadth of their training and reminded of how much they’re capable of.

What we hear, time and again, is that Broken Hill doesn’t turn doctors into someone new. It reconnects them with who they already are.

We work with multiple GP opportunities in Broken Hill across RFDS, AMS, and local health services. We take care of all the details from credentialing to travel and accommodation so our doctors can focus on the medicine, the people, and the experience itself.
