Turns out the ginger doesn't need to look pretty to make a good drink.

We came across Panda B**r, born on the Gold Coast and working with Queensland farmers to put overlooked produce to better use.

At the centre of it is Panda Ginger B**r, made with up to 25% real Australian ginger root.

No added sugar. No artificial flavours. Just ginger doing what ginger does best.
There is something refreshingly simple about the idea.

A farmer grows the produce. Some of it doesn't make the supermarket cut. Panda finds another use for it.

And instead of ending up as waste, it ends up in your glass.
That's the bit worth paying attention to.

Because sustainability doesn't always need a complicated explanation. Sometimes it's an Australian ginger root that wasn't quite pretty enough for the supermarket, getting a second life as a cold ginger b**r.

From Queensland farms to the Gold Coast and, eventually, the bar.
Not bad for a ginger that didn't make the beauty pageant.
Panda Ginger B**r. Real ingredients. Big flavour. Less waste.

Another new partnership for the Drinks Network family.

Congratulations to Andrew Power for bringing Brisbane River Fine W**e and Spirits in Lowood on board with Corowa Distilling Co.

It's always good to see Australian wh**ky finding its way into new parts of the country, and even better when there's a new retailer behind the bottle ready to introduce it to their customers.

Good work, Andrew.

One more shelf for Corowa. One more partnership for Drinks Network.

Wh**ky is made from grain. But the cask gets a pretty big say in what happens next.

Headlands Distilling Co. starts with Australian grain, local growers and a proper grain to glass operation in Wollongong. They mill it, mash it, ferment it and distil the spirit themselves.
Then comes the part that can send things in a completely different direction.

The cask.
Take the Apera Cask. Headlands finishes the wh**ky in oak seasoned with 18 year old Seppeltsfield Rare Rich Apera. Suddenly you are talking marmalade, dried fruit peel, walnuts, toasted oak, baked pear and vanilla.

The Muscat Cask takes another route. Four Roses bourbon cask first, then French oak seasoned with 15 year old Seppeltsfield Rare Muscat.
Same distillery. Same 46% ABV. Very different wh**ky.

And eventually, bottles like these have to leave Wollongong and find somewhere to be opened.
On 19 September, that somewhere is Cobbler in West End.

Headlands Brand Ambassador Manuel Terron will be there taking guests through the range and getting into what those different casks actually do to the spirit.
Which is probably a better way to spend an afternoon than arguing about wh**ky on the internet.

Grain. Spirit. Wood. Time.
Then someone pours it into a glass and you get to decide what you think.

A good new partnership is always worth talking about.

Big congratulations to Dane Alderson in Melbourne for bringing Lower Plenty Liquor Lower Plenty Liquor on board with Drinks Network.

The new order brings together Headlands, Lady Triệu, Nhậu, San Junipero and BLVD, giving the store a pretty serious selection of Australian and Vietnamese spirits and ready to drink cocktails to work with.

Five brands. One new retail partner. And a very good reason to raise a glass.

Nice work, Dane.

Now let's see what happens when those bottles and pouches hit the shelves.

What happens when you leave an old favourite in the hands of someone with a different idea?

We found an Espresso Martini at Chu the Phat in Fish Lane, South Brisbane that gave us a pretty good answer.

It looks familiar.

Coffee. Vodka. Ice. The usual late night troublemaker.

But the bottle behind the bar is Barlei Coffee Liqueur, a naturally sugar free liqueur from Australian brand Barlei.

The idea came from co founder Lexy Meyerson, who asked a fairly sensible question: why does a cocktail need all that added sugar in the first place?

Fair question.

So Barlei set about making liqueurs and aperitivos that could still do the job without it.

At Chu The Phat, that idea ends up somewhere much more interesting than a pitch deck.

It ends up in a glass.

And Chu The Phat isn't the only Brisbane venue putting Barlei to work. Casa Casa Cibo is also serving Barlei, showing how the range can find its way into familiar cocktails without asking the bartender to completely rethink the menu.

That's where these things get interesting.

A product can have a good story. A founder can have a good idea. But eventually someone has to stand behind a bar and make the drink.

Here, the result is an Espresso Martini that looks like the one you already know, with a different idea sitting underneath it.

Sometimes you don't need to reinvent the cocktail.

You just need to ask why it was made that way in the first place.

Barlei. Cocktails Without Compromise.

Welcome to BLVD Pouched cocktails.

Cocktails in a pouch. Yes, really.

Hayden Wood takes a closer look at BLVD Drinks, a range of bar quality cocktails packaged in a format that looks more at home in the yoghurt aisle than behind a bar.

Cosmopolitan. Espresso Martini. Lychee Martini.

Each pouch is $12.99, with counter displays designed to make them easy to spot and easy to grab.

A number of Brisbane retailers have also been among the first to get behind the range and stock BLVD, including Saccharomyces, Amato's Liquor Mart, Like Strike, Rose Bud, Southend, James Market, Aspley Central Tavern and Tom's Cellars.

So if you want to see what all the fuss is about, you know where to start.

For independent retailers, it's a simple proposition.

A familiar cocktail. A different format. No bottle collection required.

And if the first week is anything to go by, people are already getting the idea.

BLVD. Bar Quality Cocktails, ready to pour.

Looks like someone gets it.

A pretty serious BLVD Drinks collection at Beechmont Cellars on the Gold Coast.
The team tells us one customer has been smashing through the stock and is already almost ready for a reorder.

We can work with that.

Bar Quality Cocktails in a pouch.
Lychee Martini. Margarita. Espresso Martini. Cosmopolitan.
Grab one. Chill it. Pour it over ice. Then, apparently, grab another one.
