The Paid Parental Leave Amendment (Improvements for Families and Gender Equality) Bill was passed on 6.3.23 extending paid parental leave to 20 weeks starting on 1 July 2023.
Changes include removing the requirement that the primary claimant must be the birth parent.

These amendments provide more families access to the payment, gives parents increased flexibility in how they take leave and encourages parents to share care to promote gender equality.
