Making eye contact is an important aspect of nonverbal communication during an interview. It demonstrates confidence, sincerity, and a willingness to engage with the interviewer. As such, it is not surprising that interviewers would view a lack of eye contact as a negative indicator.

If over 65% of interviewers indicated that failure to make eye contact was a reason for eliminating a candidate from the interview process, it suggests that this is a commonly observed behavior that can significantly impact a candidate's chances of getting hired. Candidates who fail to make eye contact may be perceived as lacking confidence, being disinterested or dishonest, or simply not being engaged in the conversation.

It is important for candidates to be aware of the role that eye contact plays in interviews and to practice making eye contact during the interview process. This can help convey a sense of professionalism and competence to the interviewer and increase the candidate's chances of being hired. However, it is also important to remember that cultural differences can play a role in how eye contact is perceived, and candidates should be sensitive to these differences in different interview settings.
