Singapore’s labour market continues to show resilience, even as hiring activity becomes more measured.

While retrenchments edged up slightly in Q1 2026, unemployment remains low, job vacancies still outnumber job seekers, and employment has now grown for 18 consecutive quarters. Perhaps one of the most encouraging signs is that more retrenched workers are finding their way back into employment, with re-entry rates continuing to improve.

From our recruiters' conversations across the market, we're seeing employers remain active, but more deliberate in their hiring decisions. Skills, adaptability and relevant experience continue to be key differentiators, particularly in sectors where demand remains strong.

As the market evolves, opportunities are still there for candidates who are prepared to stay agile and align their skills with where growth is happening.

New Zealand's labour market continues to show signs of resilience.

While conditions remain mixed, the latest Stats NZ data shows unemployment easing slightly to 5.3%, with average hourly earnings increasing 3.1% over the past year and full-time workers now earning an average of $1,716 per week.

Looking more closely at the sectors Mills Recruitment works across, MBIE’s March 2026 Labour Market Snapshot points to continued activity in several key industries.

Agriculture, forestry and fishing employment increased by around 2.0% over the year, while manufacturing rose by approximately 6.7%. Construction employment also remains substantial, with almost 300,000 people employed nationally and the sector sitting around 7.8% higher than five years ago.

For agriculture, agri-manufacturing, civil, commercial, roading and housing-related construction, the data points to sustained demand for capability across the industries that underpin New Zealand’s economy.

The picture is not one of rapid growth across every area, but it does point to a labour market that continues to create opportunities, lift earnings and adapt to changing conditions.
