Three HR Compliance Areas Small Businesses Shouldn’t Ignore

Small business owners wear many hats, and HR compliance is one that can easily slip through the cracks.

Three key areas to keep on top of include:

✅ Pay, awards and employee entitlements
✅ Workplace policies and employee management
✅ WHS and psychosocial safety

Getting the basics right helps protect your business, support your team and reduce unnecessary risk.

HR compliance does not need to be overwhelming, but it does need to be intentional.

When Small Business Owners Wear Every Hat

HR compliance can be challenging for small businesses, especially when owners are already managing staff, customers, finances and day-to-day operations.

From employment documents and pay obligations to workplace policies, leave entitlements, privacy and WHS requirements, there is a lot to keep on top of.

The good news is that simple, practical systems can make a big difference. Clear documents, good record keeping and consistent communication all help reduce risk and support a better workplace.

HR compliance does not need to be overwhelming, but it does need to be intentional.

International HR Day is coming up on 20 May, providing an opportunity to recognise the important role HR professionals play in shaping safe, fair and productive workplaces.

As technology, AI and workplace expectations continue to evolve, the human side of HR remains more important than ever. From supporting people through change, strengthening workplace culture, improving communication and guiding ethical decision-making, HR continues to sit at the centre of meaningful organisational progress.

This year’s themes are a timely reminder that while AI can support efficiency, it is human judgement, empathy and leadership that help create workplaces where people can genuinely thrive.

To all HR professionals, people leaders and workplace changemakers, thank you for the work you do every day.

The Fair Work Commission has announced that junior pay rates for workers aged 18 to 20 in retail, fast food and pharmacy will begin to be phased out from December 2026.
The plan is to roll out the change gradually over four years, with workers who have been with the same employer for at least six months receiving the full adult rate each year by July 1st, 2029.

For many young workers, this means that doing the same job will finally mean receiving the same pay.

Junior rates will still apply to workers under 18.

For employers, now is the time to start reviewing budgets, payroll systems and workforce planning.

On ANZAC Day, we pause to remember and honour all those who have served our country, with deep respect, gratitude, and reflection.

We acknowledge the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the men and women who served, and we also extend our thanks to the service animals who stood beside them in times of war and hardship. At CROSS Recruit, this day holds personal meaning, with both past and present family connections to the military.

We honour their service, and the service of all who have given so much.

Lest we forget
