Just because the file name says:

“FirstName_LastName_Professional_Resume.pdf”

…does not actually mean it’s professional 😅

I review resumes every day across FIFO, mining, shutdowns, trades, engineering and white collar roles and honestly, some of the resumes people have paid good money for are:
• full of generic buzzwords
• hard to read
• badly formatted
• outdated
• not ATS friendly
• missing key industry keywords
• too long
• too vague
• not aligned to the actual jobs being applied for

A professional resume should:
• sell your value quickly
• be easy to scan
• target the role properly
• pass ATS systems
• highlight achievements and transferable skills
• position you competitively in the current market

Not just look fancy or have “professional” in the file name 😂

I offer free resume health checks for people wanting honest feedback on:
• FIFO resumes
• mining resumes
• shutdown resumes
• trades resumes
• engineering resumes
• government applications
• LinkedIn profiles

Sometimes small changes can make a massive difference to call backs and interview rates.

Another great update from a client pursuing one of WA’s most competitive roles - the PTA Trainee Train Driver Program.

This application was not just about “making a resume look good”.

The strategy was heavily focused on understanding exactly what PTA recruitment panels are looking for in high-volume, safety-critical recruitment processes.

Fort his client, we worked on:

• Positioning transferable experience correctly for a safety-critical environment
• Demonstrating reliability, procedures, communication and situational awareness
• Strengthening examples aligned to the selection criteria and behavioural expectations
• Structuring the application to be clear, easy to follow and ATS friendly
• Refining wording to sound professional, genuine and operationally focused
• Building a stronger overall narrative around suitability for train operations and public transport environments

Result so far?

✔ Progressed through initial application stage
✔ Invited to complete the SCAAT aptitude testing
✔ Also receiving interview activity from other employers at the same time

These competitive roles are rarely about “just having experience”.

Strategy, positioning, structure and understanding the recruitment process properly can make a massive difference.

Another client win 🙌

“Resume went well mate. Got a job. Thank you.”

Messages like this genuinely make my day.

Helping good people land roles across mining, FIFO, trades, government and professional industries is exactly why I started Resumes For Dudes.

This client had ZERO mining experience...

We completely reworked his Resume and Cover Letter to better position his transferable skills, project experience, safety exposure and overall value for mining sector employers.

I had not even finalised the documents yet.

He started applying using the DRAFT versions and already came back with multiple calls and an interview invitation for mining sector roles.

That is the power of:
✓ Better positioning
✓ Better ATS optimisation
✓ Better structure and readability
✓ Translating experience into what employers actually want to see
✓ Making recruiters understand your value within seconds

A strong Resume will not magically create experience you do not have.

But it CAN completely change how your background is perceived.

Especially for people trying to break into mining, FIFO or heavy industry roles.

This is exactly why I always say:
Do not underestimate the importance of first impressions.

One thing I always try to explain to clients is that a Resume is not just about “adding more”.

Most of the time, it is about positioning existing experience properly.

I received this LinkedIn recommendation today from a client who recently landed a General Manager role after we worked together on his Resume and LinkedIn profile.

What stood out to me was this part:

“The resume and LI profile now look a lot different, with much the same content in there but presented in a much more relevant and direct way.”

A lot of people already have strong experience, skills and achievements.

The problem is:
• the Resume is too generic
• the positioning is off
• key achievements are buried
• the messaging lacks direction
• recruiters cannot quickly connect the dots

Small strategic changes can completely change how someone is perceived in the market.

Always great seeing good people land strong opportunities.

A lot of people think a resume consult is just me fixing formatting.

It’s not.

These are some of the questions I regularly ask clients during a consult before I even start writing:

• What exact roles are you targeting?
• What feedback have you received from applications so far?
• Are you getting interviews or being overlooked?
• What projects or achievements are you most proud of?
• What systems, software or tools do you use daily?
• What safety, compliance or leadership responsibilities do you handle?
• Have you trained, supervised or mentored others?
• What are recruiters or employers really looking for in your industry?
• What experience is currently missing or undersold on your resume?
• What results, improvements or outcomes have you delivered?
• What licences, tickets or qualifications strengthen your value?
• What type of companies or industries are you trying to move into?
• What makes you different from other applicants on paper?
• Is your LinkedIn profile helping or hurting your opportunities?
• Are there any career gaps, transitions or concerns we need to address properly?

A good resume is not just about writing.

It’s about uncovering the value, positioning and evidence that recruiters actually look for.

That’s why consultations matter.

Too many people are applying with resumes that only list duties instead of selling capability, results and suitability.

This is where strategy makes a huge difference.

“Mate the response has been crickets a waste of money.”

That was a reply I received today after following up with a previous client.

And this is exactly why I like staying in touch with people after their resume has been completed.

Not because I want a review or another sale but because I genuinely want to know what is happening out there in the market and whether people are actually getting traction.

The truth is there is so much more to a job search than just having a resume.

A strong resume absolutely matters.

It can help get you through filters, improve first impressions and position you far more professionally.

But it is not the only piece of the puzzle.

There is also:

• competition

• timing

• the roles being targeted

• location

• application strategy

• cover letters

• recruiters

• interview performance

• networking

• salary expectations

I have seen candidates with average resumes land jobs quickly.

I have also seen highly experienced people with excellent resumes struggle for months in difficult markets.

That is why I never like overselling resumes as some magical overnight fix.

What I CAN say is this:

- A poor resume can absolutely hold someone back.

- A strong resume gives you a far better chance.

From there, sometimes we need to adjust the strategy around it.

If one of my clients is not getting results, I would rather know about it so we can review what is happening and see what can be improved.

Job searching can really take a toll on people mentally and financially after a while.

So if things have gone quiet for you lately, keep pushing forward.

And if you are one of my previous clients, reach out any time. Happy to help where I can.

Another awesome result from a recent client.

“Every job I applied for, I got.”

Mark recently reached out after landing work and advised that after updating his resume, he was suddenly in the position to pick and choose opportunities rather than struggling to get noticed.

He mentioned the resume “definitely opened the eyes of recruitment staff” which is exactly what a strong resume should do.

A good resume is not just about listing jobs. It is about:
• Positioning your experience properly
• Improving recruiter readability
• Showing value quickly
• Getting through ATS systems
• Making employers actually stop and take notice

Really happy with this outcome for Mark and appreciate the feedback.

If your current resume is not getting results, there is usually a reason why.

If you’re applying for jobs and not getting responses, it’s usually not random.

There’s always a reason.

Most of the time it comes down to:

Structure
Clarity
Alignment to the role

Small changes can make a big difference.

If you’re not sure what’s missing, happy to take a look and point you in the right direction.

Most people think writing a resume is just listing what you’ve done.

It’s not.

It’s deciding what matters.

What to include.
What to leave out.
What to emphasise.

Two people can have the exact same experience.

One gets interviews.
One gets nothing.

Same background.

Different positioning.
