Some projects become defining moments in a company’s history. For Whittens, Sino Iron is one of them.
Completed in 2011 in Western Australia’s Pilbara, it was the project that put our company on the map.
Our crews built the concrete structures for six of the largest autogenous (AG) mills in the world at the time — massive reinforced concrete structures standing approximately 17 metres high.
The client set us a six-month target. We delivered it: 36,000m³ of concrete placed in six months, averaging 6,000m³ a month and around 200m³ every day.
Our scope also included conveyor foundations, reclaim tunnels, transfer stations, pipe rack footings and associated infrastructure. By completion, our team had placed approximately 65,000m³ of concrete across the project.
Complex and delivered on program, Sino Iron remains one of our favourite projects from the past 25 years — and a credit to our people.
