Suraiya | School-based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year

Balancing school, two qualifications and workplace experience is giving Suraiya an early start on a career in hospital administration. Through a placement at Bunbury Regional Hospital, Suraiya has been able to put learning into practice while building confidence, professional skills and a clearer picture of where the future could lead.

What started as curiosity while working as a Trade Assistant became a clear path for Gerogia. After organising work experience with the maintenance team, she knew this was the industry she wanted to pursue.

Now in the second year of a Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology apprenticeship, hosted by Civmec, Georgia continues to build skills, confidence and experience in the trade.

Our try-a-trade students, pre-apprentices and apprentices in plumbing, painting, bricklaying and carpentry, recently joined the DeWALT team at our Forrestfield Campus for an interactive morning focused on tool safety, innovation and best practice on site.

The students explored the PERFORM & PROTECT™ range, learning how innovative tool design can help reduce workplace risks while maintaining productivity and performance.

The students also enjoyed a practical demonstration of DeWALT's GUARANTEED TOUGH® range, gaining a better understanding of the quality, durability and reliability expected of professional-grade tools. Experiences like these help bridge the gap between training and the realities of working on site.

A big thank you to DEWALT for coming out and sharing their expertise and supporting the next generation of skilled tradespeople, Construction Training Fund for coming along, and Bunnings Trade Australia for kicking off the morning with a delicious BBQ breakfast.

There’s something pretty special about learning new skills and seeing them put to good use. 🙌

When Skill Hire was asked to help with a hands-on project for The Salvation Army Australia in Butler, trainer Simon volunteered his time to guide Alkimos College students through the build, helping turn their idea into a finished project and sharing his industry skills along the way.

It was wonderful to see the students learning from Simon, working together and using their new skills to create something that will give back to their local community.

A big thank you to Alkimos College for welcoming Simon and giving Skill Hire the opportunity to be part of the project. It’s opportunities like this that show what can happen when schools, industry and community come together.

Plenty of hands-on learning for our Bricklayer Job Ready Program participants in Bunbury. 🧱

Working alongside Housing Industry Association - HIA and Brick and Block Careers, Skill Hire is helping participants build their skills and confidence through three weeks of theory and hands-on training, followed by a week of work placement.

This program is all about giving participants practical experience and a stronger pathway towards a bricklaying apprenticeship.

Starting an apprenticeship or traineeship comes with a lot of change. New skills, new people, new expectations and plenty of moments where you’re still working things out.

At Skill Hire, our trainers and teams are there to answer questions, offer guidance and help apprentices, trainees and students find their feet along the way.

There’ll be good days and tougher ones. This World Mental Health Day is a reminder that when things do feel like a lot, talking to a mate, trainer, supervisor or someone you trust can be a good place to start.

Eligible participants can access up to 3 FREE one-hour sessions, available in person, online or over the phone.​

To be eligible, you must:​
✅Be aged 15-24​
✅Be in Workforce Australia Online, Full or Base Service​
✅Have 1-3 sessions remaining​

A hands-on finish for our Construction Training Fund School-Based Plumbing Pre-Apprentices in Bunbury! 🔧

On their final day, our Schools Programs Coordinator, Nicole, joined the group for a Trade Fair, where students got hands-on with tools, equipment and products they could encounter in the plumbing industry.

A big thank you to Crystal Ridley from Galvins Plumbing Supplies, Alysha Thomas from Micron Water Filters, Nathan Barrett from Rheem and Glenn Rideout from RIDGID Australia for sharing their time, industry knowledge and demonstrations with the group.

Congratulations to Jacob White, who also walked away with an Apprenticeship Starter Tool Kit thanks to the raffle organised by Crystal! 🎉
