WA just levelled up its exploration game 🛰️

The state has officially launched the HyLogger 4 - a next-gen spectral scanner that captures ultra high-resolution data from drill core samples.

What does that mean for the industry?

✔ Faster, more accurate geological analysis
✔ Better targeting of mineral deposits
✔ Reduced risk for early-stage exploration

Silverstone supports innovation that strengthens our sector and drives smarter, safer exploration across Western Australia.

🔍 Safety Focus: Confined Spaces

Confined spaces can be some of the most dangerous areas in the workplace, often lacking ventilation, hiding unseen hazards, and presenting serious health and safety risks.
Under WA’s WHS Act, a confined space is any enclosed or partially enclosed area that:

🚫 Isn’t designed for human occupancy
🌬️ Is at normal atmospheric pressure when entered
⚠️ Could present risks from hazardous atmospheres, contaminants, engulfment, or other dangers

Key risks include:
— Exposure to airborne contaminants
— Fire or explosion
— Oxygen deficiency or engulfment in liquids/loose materials
— Extreme temperatures and poor lighting
— Rescue challenges if someone is injured or unconscious

Best practice for safety:
📝 Conduct thorough risk assessments
📊 Test the atmosphere before entry
💨 Use ventilation and control measures
🎓 Train all personnel in confined space procedures
📂 Keep detailed entry records

✅ Safety in confined spaces is non-negotiable, the right protocols save lives.

📣 A landmark ruling could shake up WA’s mining landscape.

The Shire of Mount Magnet has successfully appealed to rate occupied crown land under Miscellaneous Licences, overturning 40 years of legal precedent.

This WA Supreme Court decision means councils can now charge rates on land used for mining infrastructure like roads, camps, and utilities, potentially adding $250 million in back rates across the sector.

Industry leaders are sounding the alarm:
⚠️ Financial uncertainty
⚠️ Risk of double rating
⚠️ Calls for urgent legislative action

With mining already contributing billions to WA’s economy, the sector is now seeking clarity to prevent further strain on operations.
