Described as a trailblazer and a powerful role model for women, Georgia has grown from strength-to-strength during her apprenticeship. She was the first female apprentice at the Western Power’s Picton and Collie depot and has evolved from a dedicated apprentice into a highly skilled line worker. She has found her experience rewarding, fulfilling and one full of milestones and achievements. Georgia is passionate about encouraging other women to try something new and explore different career pathways – even in traditionally male-dominated trades.

Third-year apprentice boilermaker Logan Brown believes the opportunity to learn on the job while working at the Port of Esperance has been a great fit.

He grew up doing fabrication work alongside his dad on speedway cars, and now he's turning that passion into a career.

"My apprenticeship has not only taught me some invaluable skills, it has also allowed me to build some great relationships with my colleagues at the Port. I also just love working by the water every day – that’s not something I’d get completing my apprenticeship elsewhere.”

Coming Home to Newman: Kevin Continues His Apprenticeship Close to Home

For Kevin Edmonds, coming home to Newman has meant more than being closer to family and friends it’s given him the opportunity to continue building his career in the community he calls home.

Kevin grew up in Newman before moving to Geraldton to begin his Boilermaking Trade apprenticeship. When he decided it was time to return home, the transition happened quickly, with just one week between finishing his previous apprenticeship arrangement and recommencing with local business Maali Mechanical.

Owners Dave and Lee-Anne are passionate about creating opportunities for young people in their community, particularly supporting local Indigenous youth to build meaningful careers. They were pleased to welcome Kevin to the team and are committed to supporting him through to the completion of his apprenticeship.

Kevin will also continue to receive support from Apprenticeship Support Australia - WA, helping him stay on track with his training and development as he works towards becoming a qualified tradesperson.

For Kevin, being back in Newman means he can continue pursuing his trade while staying close to the people and community that matter most to him.

👏 A fantastic example of what can happen when local employers invest in local people and create opportunities for young people to build their careers close to home.

Services Australia is hosting a free webinar to help young people prepare for work, study and managing their finances after leaving school.

The ‘Financial Information When Leaving School’ webinar will explore starting work, understanding and managing money, setting long-term goals and planning for the future.

The webinar is free to attend and can be joined online from anywhere. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions through the live chat.

👷CTF was thrilled to host our first in-person Construction Industry Apprentice Council (CIAC) catch-up.

A huge thanks to these legends who took time out of their busy schedules to be there and share their experiences. 👏

The discussion was frank, honest and incredibly valuable, helping CTF better understand:
✅ what's working well and not so well for apprentices
✅ ideas from people living the apprenticeship experience every day
✅ how future training and support initiatives can better meet industry needs

MEEDAC Esperance Community & Employment Expo 2026
It was fantastic to be part of the MEEDAC Esperance Community & Employment Expo 2026, which attracted approximately 350 attendees and 37 exhibitors from across the region.

The event provided a great opportunity to connect with students from local schools, job seekers, and community members who were interested in learning more about the exciting pathways available through apprenticeships and traineeships. It was inspiring to see so many people actively exploring opportunities to build skills and careers in regional Western Australia.

A big thank you to our valued stakeholders and employer partners, including Horizon Power (see glove photo) and DEWR, for their ongoing collaboration and commitment to supporting workforce development. Events like these highlight the importance of working together to create meaningful employment and training opportunities for our communities.

Looking forward to continuing these conversations and helping more people take the next step in their career journey.
