Pride Month is a time to recognise and celebrate diversity, connection and belonging.

This year, the Sydney Pride Festival 2026 runs from 1–30 June and is themed Connected in Colour.

“Connected in Colour is about celebrating the threads that tie us together as a community. No matter our differences, we are united by Pride.”
— Glenn Hansen, Co‑ordinator, Sydney Pride Festival

Global Skills is proud to stand with the LGBTQIA+ community during Pride Month. As a member of the ACON Welcome Here Project, we display Welcome Here rainbow stickers across our offices as a visible sign that everyone is welcome, respected and safe.

Through inclusive services and everyday actions, we continue to support inclusion, respect and a sense of belonging for our participants, employers, staff and the wider community.

Last week, Global Skills had the opportunity to take part in the annual Macarthur Careers Expo at Minto Indoor Sports Centre.

The expo brought together students from 21 high schools across the Macarthur region, with young people in Years 10, 11 and 12 from both Government and Non-Government schools attending to explore career pathways and post-school options.

It was a great opportunity for our team to connect with students, share information about the support available through our programs, and be part of an event that encourages young people to start thinking about their next steps.

A big thank you to Career Key for organising such a valuable event, and to all the students who stopped by to chat with us throughout the day.

This week, 27 March to 3 June, marks National Reconciliation Week. The 2026 theme, ‘All In’, calls on all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. It also provides an opportunity for Global Skills to reflect on how we build understanding, respect and genuine inclusion in our everyday work.

Global Skills supports people to develop skills, confidence and pathways to employment, while recognising the diverse histories and experiences that shape our communities. Reconciliation is not just about acknowledgment; it is about listening, strengthening relationships, and supporting inclusion through fair and culturally respectful opportunities.

We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we work and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We remain committed to supporting inclusive participation through the services we deliver.

Congratulations to Wetherill Park participant Jamila on reaching her 6-month employment milestone after joining Global Skills’ Inclusive Employment Australia program in November 2025.

When Jamila met her Employment Consultant, Christine, she explained what she was looking for. “I have a lot of skills that I want to use in the community, but I don’t have a lot of energy and get tired quickly,” she said.

With qualifications in counselling and community work, Jamila felt a support worker role would suit her. She identified Your Local Care Partner as an employer of interest. With Christine’s support, she secured an interview and was offered the role. “They were happy to interview me based on my skillset and could offer the flexibility I need,” Jamila said.

Jamila has found the role a good fit. “My clients are lovely and my role has a lot of variety,” she said. “Whatever the client wants to do, I do with them.” She has also brought her creative skills into her work, teaching sewing, flower arranging and jewellery making.

Flexibility has been key. “I mostly work in the mornings as my energy runs out by the afternoon,” she said. “I work hard and do as much as I can with my energy.”

Jamila also acknowledged the support she received. “Global Skills helped with my first aid certificate, checks, travel and clothes,” she said. “Christine has been a wonderful emotional support and reached out to the employer on my behalf.”

Jennifer Sharkey, Business Development Manager at Your Local Care Partner, praised the positive contribution Jamila has made to the team. “We are delighted to have someone like Jamila working with us. She genuinely cares about the people she supports and brings a wonderful range of skills to her role.”

Congratulations again, Jamila, and thank you for sharing your story.

This week, 18–25 May, is National Volunteer Week. Global Skills is celebrating Chatswood participant Richard and his journey from volunteering to reaching his 6-month employment milestone with Vinnies on the Lower North Shore.

After working as a barista, Richard stepped away from work to recover from surgery. When he felt ready to return, he connected with Global Skills Chatswood and started working with his Employment Consultant, Vanessa.

Richard shared, “Recovering from surgery took many years, and during that time I felt like I lost my confidence. Vanessa was really good to talk to. She helped me prepare for interviews and, along with Global Skills Community Engagement Officer Jennifer, helped me find volunteer work at Vinnies.”

“To me, volunteering is about staying active and building confidence and skills,” he said. “It really helped me.”

Richard went on to complete two volunteer placements at Vinnies in Crows Nest, where Priyanka was his manager.

After his volunteer placements, Richard was offered a position by Priyanka at the Neutral Bay store. With support from Global Skills, including work clothes and help getting to and from work, he settled into the role quickly. He now also works across Vinnies stores in Crows Nest and Willoughby.

“I can open and close. I can do anything. I learnt a lot at Crows Nest. My favourite part is customer service. I enjoy working in retail and being busy. I am grateful to Priyanka for giving me the opportunity. I feel more confident now and I am happy where I am.”

Priyanka added, “Richard started with us as a volunteer and has progressed incredibly quickly. He’s an all-rounder who takes on every task with confidence and a strong work ethic. We’re grateful to have him as part of the team.”

Congratulations again, Richard, and thank you for sharing your story.

Yesterday, Global Skills had the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2026 Western Sydney Employment, Life Skills & Leisure Expo hosted by the Western Sydney Vocational Support Network at Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope.

The expo brought together senior school students with disability, along with their families, carers, teachers and support staff, to explore services and support available as students prepare for life after school. Students in Years 10, 11 and 12 from Government, Catholic and Independent Schools across Western Sydney attended the event.

Our team spent the day speaking with attendees about the support available through our Inclusive Employment Australia program. It was also a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections with other local community organisations supporting young people across the region.

It was lovely to hear feedback from parents and students that being able to speak with a range of organisations in one place helped them better understand the options available to them after school.

Global Skills extends our thanks to the Western Sydney Vocational Support Network and everyone else involved in organising and attending this valuable and successful event.
