This week marks National Reconciliation Week, a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements and the role each of us plays in shaping a more inclusive future.

This year’s theme, All In, is a call for collective action. It reminds us that reconciliation is not a spectator effort and that meaningful change requires all of us to contribute every day.

At IntoWork, our vision of Vibrant Futures is grounded in respect, opportunity and collaboration. We are committed to working alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities to support equitable pathways, strengthen understanding and create lasting outcomes.

Being All In means listening, learning and taking action not just this week, but through the choices we make and the work we do every day.

After 14 years as Group CEO of IntoWork, Poul Bottern has recently tendered his resignation, effective from the end of June this year, as he pursues other business interests.

The Board of IntoWork would like to acknowledge and thank Poul for his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication, expertise and strategic guidance over the past 14 years, building IntoWork into the large, respected and leading provider in the sector it is today.

Given Poul’s focus over the coming weeks to ensure an effective handover including working with our Boards on governance matters, we have appointed Christine Zechowski as Acting Group CEO, whilst we recruit for an ongoing Group CEO. Christine has been with IntoWork for many years, including as Group Chief Commercial Officer. She is joined by a strong Executive team and experienced CEOs, so IntoWork is in good hands.

In communicating with Staff, Poul noted: It has been a pleasure and privilege to lead IntoWork with the Board and Leadership Team. My highlights have been many, from our growth of 125 to 2,600 skilled staff, expansion across Australia and New Zealand, and increasing services for the most marginalised and disadvantaged members of our community. However, the largest highlight for me has been the pleasure of working with the fantastic group of people within IntoWork as well as our business partners and the broader sectors we engage with!

We thank Poul for his significant contribution and wish him and his family the very best for the future.

For thousands of years, the Coorong has been a place of deep cultural meaning for the Ngarrindjeri people. Today, it is also shaping new futures for young people learning to care for Country.

Through a partnership with the Ngarrindjeri Lands and Progress Association, Mas National is supporting training pathways that allow students to build practical skills in land management, conservation and agriculture while staying connected to culture and community. Learning happens on Country, in an environment that values identity, belonging and purpose.

For one young participant, that connection made all the difference. When Tarah Marygold, Apprenticeship Consultant with MAS National, first met Tyerone, he was disengaged from school and struggling to see where he fit. With support from NLPA and time spent training one day each week within their agricultural program, his confidence began to grow.

Just weeks later, teachers noticed the change. When asked how he was going, Tyerone’s answer said it all: “I just love it.” That moment, the spark returning, reflects what’s possible when learning feels relevant, culturally strong and grounded in real opportunity.

This is what meaningful pathways look like. Step by step, young people are reconnecting with culture, gaining skills and building futures that honour both Country and career.

Sometimes, the first step into a career opens a door you never expected.

When Ky Nichols sat down for his first interview, he did not yet realise it would lead to working on machinery built for some of the harshest environments on earth. After leaving school early to find a hands-on pathway, Ky connected with Work & Training and started a Mobile Plant Mechanic apprenticeship that would take his skills further than he imagined.

Now in his third year, Ky is working in Hobart with the Australian Antarctic Division, helping refurbish specialised vehicles used for operations in sub‑Antarctic conditions. From amphibious recovery vehicles to over‑snow transporters, the diversity of his work has allowed him to build technical skills few apprentices ever have the opportunity to develop.

That momentum was recently recognised when Ky was named Second Year Apprentice of the Year at the 2025 Work & Training Awards. A late application and a unique career pathway made his achievement even more memorable, showing how far he has come since that first interview.

With Antarctica firmly in his sights and long‑term goals forming on the ice, Ky’s journey is a reminder that when curiosity meets opportunity, careers can take shape in extraordinary ways.

A career in the arts is not always a straight path.

For Sabine Jamieson, it took time, exploration and the right opportunity to see what was possible. With an art school background and experience in gallery and customer-facing roles, she knew she wanted to work in the sector, but a clear pathway had not yet emerged.

That changed when Sabine commenced a curator cadetship at Mosman Art Gallery, delivered by MRAEL in partnership with the gallery. The cadetship provided real, hands-on experience alongside her studies and opened access to a role she had not previously seen as attainable.

Through the program, Sabine has continued to build confidence and capability in her curatorial practice. Her commitment to learning has been recognised through a Dean’s List Honor Award, and she is now curating her first exhibition at Mosman Art Gallery, a significant milestone in her emerging career.

As part of her degree, Sabine has also gained valuable global perspective through study travel in China and Taiwan, strengthening both her personal growth and professional outlook.

Sabine’s journey reflects what can happen when passion is met with practical opportunity and structured support. Step by step, what once felt uncertain has become a clear and meaningful career pathway, shaping Vibrant Futures in the arts.
