World Environment Day is a reminder, but caring for the only planet we have should be part of what we do every day.

“Climate change is no longer a future threat; it is reshaping life across the planet,” says the United Nations.

We all have the power to make a difference and take simple steps each day to reduce our impact on the environment. One place to start is cutting pollution by reducing our reliance on unnecessary single use plastics.

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water suggests four daily choices you can make:

-Avoid disposable plastic items like cutlery and straws

-Choose alternatives to non-recyclable plastics

-Refuse products with excessive packaging

-Use reusable options such as water bottles and coffee cups

There is one more thing you can do. Share the message and inspire others in your community to take action too.

Everyone will face turbulent times, but not everyone will talk about it.

People close to you at work might be dealing with loss, family issues, financial stress, health problems, or mental health challenges like anxiety or depression.

You can make a difference by listening, giving them space to express their feelings and talk openly about what they’re going through.

But people don’t always open up straight away. Sometimes it starts with a simple, meaningful conversation, maybe over a coffee or during a break.

When you understand your role in offering support and managing both your colleagues’ emotions and your own, you can help a workmate more than you think.

What makes a successful career? Can one big loss hide all your wins?

The FIFA World Cup is almost here, and as in all sports, some stories are so incredible that you can learn great lessons from them.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, or Big Phil, has over 20 titles managing different soccer teams worldwide, including leading the renowned Brazilian team to win its fifth World Cup in 2002. They still remain the only nation to have ever won that many titles.

However, he is also remembered for what is now seen as one of the worst defeats in soccer history, maybe even in all of sport.

On 9 July 2014, Germany scored seven goals against Brazil, the host nation of that year’s FIFA World Cup.

At home, Brazil was silenced. They have built one of the most successful stories in the sport over more than 100 years.

No one could have ever imagined something like that happening. Not anywhere in the world, and even less in Brazil.

You don’t build a legacy with victories only. Failure and losses are also part of the story.

You will be remembered for the good and the bad. The wins and the defeats. All of it is valuable and gives great lessons.

How you react when you fail will tell more about you than when you succeed.

Be prepared for the days of glory, but also for those you might wish were a different story. That’s what makes a career.

Will you watch the FIFA World Cup? What team are you supporting?

Friday is here, and if you want to unwind a bit, how about grabbing some popcorn and watching Cars 3?

If you have kids at home, even better. You can all take something valuable from it.

They may be too young to fully understand, but Sally makes a great point.

Giving yourself permission to fail means giving yourself the chance to go after what you want.

The risk of failing also means you’ve been given the opportunity to try. You’ve found a way to pursue your goals and dreams.

Failure can happen. It’s part of the process. But you got the chance, and that’s what really matters.

If you win, that’s amazing. If you fall short, you still walk away with lessons, and that’s just as valuable.

So, if you have the chance, give yourself permission to fail.

What are your thoughts?

Have a great weekend.

Reconciliation doesn’t take a week. We must be 'All in' and committed to making change happen every single day.

In May 2022, we established a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) working group, made up of people with expertise in recruitment, training, and foundation skills programs. The RAP framework helps organisations like FindStaff build respectful relationships and create opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

As part of the IntoWork Australia Group, we had the opportunity to connect with Kurnai woman and artist Montana McStay. This was possible because she had recently completed a Self‑Employment Assistance program with our sister company IntoJobs, which gave her the support needed to start her own business.

After launching Inala Art & Design, a Kinaway Certified Business, we became her clients and commissioned a piece to represent our Reconciliation Action Plan. You can see the “Our Country” artwork on our website or when you visit our Northcote office in Victoria.

Since then, Montana has used her art to promote Aboriginal culture in the community and stay connected to her Country, culture, and family. She has also worked with a range of businesses, building a strong portfolio that includes these unique Hi‑Vis shirts.

You can check out her work here: https://www.facebook.com/inalaartanddesign

Do you know why this artwork is so important for our team?

Created by artist Montana McStay, it represents Findstaff’s Reconciliation Action Plan.

Named “Our Country”, the piece carries a meaningful message of community and inclusivity, with footprints symbolising our connection to the land, finding our path, and guiding those in need.

If this is “Our Country”, we need to be “All In” to make reconciliation happen in Australia.

That’s the message of this year’s Reconciliation Week, which starts today and calls on all Australians to commit to making reconciliation part of everyday actions.

“All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change,” said Reconciliation Australia.

“Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.”

As we enter this week, we invite you to learn more about our Reconciliation Action Plan and how it helps us build respectful relationships and create opportunities with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples: https://bit.ly/3RoWQcE

You can hurt your body at work, whether you’re carrying heavy loads or sitting at your desk all day.

And once you’re injured, recovery isn’t always easy.

You have already seen athletes step away from competition because it’s impossible to keep going once the pain becomes unbearable.

Although you may think it will never happen to you because your job isn’t physically demanding, your health may still be at risk. Not moving enough is already a hazard.

So, be smart and protect your body:

-Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

-Don’t ignore persistent pain for too long

-Seek medical advice early

-Stay active and keep your body moving

-Rest and take regular breaks

What’s your tip for avoiding injuries or preventing chronic pain at work?

After 14 years as Group CEO of IntoWork, Poul Bottern has recently tendered his resignation, effective from the end of June this year, as he pursues other business interests.

The Board of IntoWork would like to acknowledge and thank Poul for his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication, expertise and strategic guidance over the past 14 years, building IntoWork into the large, respected and leading provider in the sector it is today.

Given Poul’s focus over the coming weeks to ensure an effective handover including working with our Boards on governance matters, we have appointed Christine Zechowski as Acting Group CEO, whilst we recruit for an ongoing Group CEO. Christine has been with IntoWork for many years, including as Group Chief Commercial Officer. She is joined by a strong Executive team and experienced CEOs, so IntoWork is in good hands.

In communicating with Staff, Poul noted: It has been a pleasure and privilege to lead IntoWork with the Board and Leadership Team. My highlights have been many, from our growth of 125 to 2,600 skilled staff, expansion across Australia and New Zealand, and increasing services for the most marginalised and disadvantaged members of our community. However, the largest highlight for me has been the pleasure of working with the fantastic group of people within IntoWork as well as our business partners and the broader sectors we engage with!

We thank Poul for his significant contribution and wish him and his family the very best for the future.
