There’s been a noticeable shift in the job market over recent weeks, with global and local factors starting to influence how employers hire and how candidates are assessed.

One recent headline involved Oracle announcing a large scale workforce reduction. While this is overseas, changes at that level often flow into broader hiring trends and employer confidence worldwide.

Closer to home, ongoing fuel supply concerns are also prompting conversations around increased flexibility across industries in Australia, including a subtle shift back towards more work from home arrangements in some sectors.

What we’re seeing locally is not a decline in opportunity, moreso a change in expectations.

Employers are placing more emphasis on outcomes and value, rather than just responsibilities in your experience. Candidates who clearly demonstrate what they’ve achieved and how they contribute are standing out more in competitive processes.

At the same time, flexibility remains an important factor in both hiring decisions and job searches, with hybrid and remote work continuing to shape the market.

This job market is… not ideal.

If you’ve got a micromanager, or one who doesn’t respect any professional boundaries, don’t rage quit.

What you should do is put together an exit plan. Decide what move you’d like to make in your career, find job advertisements you’re interested in, polish your resume, apply to these new roles and stick it out.

Use your leave entitlements to interview, and quietly exit with professionalism. You don’t want to be left struggling to land a new role if you’ve already quit.

Close your cover letter with confidence. End on a strong note by inviting the recruiter to take the next step. A thoughtful call to action shows initiative and a genuine interest in the role.

This top continues our cover letter advice series that explores:
- Opening with a compelling hook that catches attention.
- Showing, not just telling, how you’re the perfect fit for the job.

How the Shifting Job Market Is Reshaping Your Resume — And How a Free Resume Review Can Help

The job market is evolving—and fast. With major political changes in the United States, a federal election announced here in Australia and return-to-office mandates rolling out across industries, job seekers are feeling the ripple effects whether they realise it or not. These macro-level shifts are reshaping hiring practices, job availability and candidate expectations. In uncertain times, one thing is clear: having a strategically written, results-focused resume is no longer optional—it's essential.

At Amlode Employment Services, we’re seeing a significant increase in clients seeking clarity in a suddenly crowded and competitive market. Some are re-entering the workforce after layoffs or career breaks. Others are looking to pivot or level up but feeling unsure about how to present their value on paper. Whatever the reason, the job market is less forgiving than it used to be.

In the private sector, return-to-office mandates are redefining how people work and what employers expect from their teams. Some job seekers are excited by the chance to return to the structure of an office environment. Others are hesitant or seeking remote-first roles only. Either way, these changes are creating friction in the application process, and standing out with a tailored, impactful resume is now more important than ever.

Here’s where we can help. Our free resume review is a no-pressure, genuinely helpful service designed to give you actionable feedback on how your resume stacks up in today’s market. We assess structure, keyword optimisation, layout, tone and relevance to your desired roles—so you can make the changes that matter most.

Whether you’re applying for your dream role, trying to land more interviews, or just not sure if your resume is doing you justice, our free resume review is the perfect first step. It’s quick, personalised and obligation-free. Because we believe in giving real value upfront, the feedback you’ll receive is designed to help you whether you work with us further or not.

It’s our way of giving back to job seekers navigating a complex market—and yes, it’s also a chance for us to show you the Amlode difference.

So if you’re serious about moving forward in your career, let us take a look.

When it comes to career success, three key factors determine your trajectory: your network, your skills and your likeability. Each plays a crucial role in landing opportunities, securing job offers and ultimately negotiating the best possible salary. Mastering these elements will set you apart from other candidates and position you for long-term success.

🔹 Networking helps you discover opportunities before they hit job boards.
In today’s job market, networking is more than just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. Many job opportunities aren’t publicly advertised, making personal and professional connections invaluable. Employers often prefer to hire through referrals, as it reduces risk and speeds up the hiring process.

Building and maintaining a strong network—whether through LinkedIn, industry events or professional associations—can give you access to opportunities that others may never see. If you’re looking to advance your career, don’t underestimate the power of a well-connected mentor, colleague or former employer.

🔹 Skills and experience prove you’re the right fit for the role.
Once you’ve secured an interview, your skills take centre stage. Employers look for candidates who not only meet the job’s technical requirements but also bring problem-solving abilities, adaptability and a results-driven mindset.

Tailoring your resume to highlight relevant skills, using measurable achievements and demonstrating industry knowledge will boost your chances of getting hired. During interviews, showcasing your expertise with specific examples of how you’ve added value in past roles can make all the difference.

🔹 Likability and confidence help you earn better offers, promotions and long term career success.
You might have the right connections and the right skills, but if you’re not someone people enjoy working with, it could cost you. Likeability plays a huge role in salary negotiations, promotions and long-term career growth. Hiring managers want to bring in employees who will positively contribute to the team culture and workplace environment.

Being personable, communicating effectively and demonstrating emotional intelligence all contribute to making a great impression. If you’re well-liked, employers may be more inclined to offer a higher salary, better benefits or greater career growth opportunities.

Mastering networking, skills and likeability creates a well-rounded professional presence that attracts the right opportunities. While you can’t control everything in your career journey, focusing on these three pillars will maximise your potential and set you up for long-term success.
