Umbrella Club is designed for experienced IT contractors who value more than just the next contract.

The community works best for professionals who have solid experience behind them, are actively consulting, and want to stay connected with others in the industry.

It’s a place to exchange knowledge, stay close to the market, and build relationships that support your contracting career over time.

If the checklist in the graphic sounds familiar, Umbrella Club may be a good fit.

Work exists. It's just not always where you're looking.

Across Melbourne right now, SAP programmes are running, transformation projects are active, and cybersecurity teams are under-resourced. The demand hasn't gone away.

Australia is expected to need 1.3 million tech workers by 2030 according to the ACS Digital Pulse report. The long-term skills shortage is real. But in the short term, the contractors getting the best work aren't necessarily the most qualified. They're the most visible.

With more roles being filled through networks before they reach listings, if you're not part of those conversations, you won't hear about those roles until it's too late.

Our latest guide covers the most in-demand IT roles in Melbourne and how to stay visible to the right opportunities.

Hiring is slowing down. But IT contractors with the right skills are busier than ever.

That's not a contradiction. It's what a selective market looks like.

Organisations haven't stopped investing in technology. They've just become more specific about who they bring in. And increasingly, those decisions are made before a role is ever advertised.

The in-demand areas right now? AI, cybersecurity, SAP, and digital transformation. Not because they're new, but because the projects are live, the deadlines are real, and teams need people they already trust.

We've put together a guide to the most in-demand IT roles in Melbourne right now, and what's actually driving that demand.

There's a lot of noise about what AI means for IT professionals. Most of it is either panic or hype.

The contractors navigating this well aren't the ones worrying about AI. They're the ones using it as a reason to double down on what makes them irreplaceable: clear thinking, strong communication, and the ability to deliver in complex environments.

That's exactly the kind of talent Umbrella Club represents.

Australia recorded over 84,700 cybercrime reports in a single year.

That's roughly one every six minutes.

And yet cybersecurity capability shortages across Melbourne remain persistent. The demand is there. The people who can deliver are not always easy to find, or visible at the right time.

For cybersecurity contractors, that gap is an opportunity. But only if you're known before the search starts.

Privileged access management, identity security, cloud protection. These are the specialisations organisations are actively trying to fill right now.

Most organisations have the tools. The harder question is: are they actually changing how work gets done?

On the 27th of May, Nick Kervin and Zach Littlefield from BDO join us to share their insights on all things digital and AI transformation. They'll cover:

> whether digital transformation has become BAU, and what that means for organisations today
> how the core elements of digital transformation are evolving, and what has shifted over the past 1-2 years
> what this means for technologists, and how their role needs to change to better shape how organisations run
> how AI is changing the equation, and what it takes to move from experimentation to real, sustained value
> an AI @ Work perspective, offering a practical lens on how organisations can rethink work, roles and operating models to fully realise the impact of AI

If you're working at the intersection of technology and organisational change, this one is worth your evening.

Want to attend? Leave a comment or send us a DM, and we'll share the details.

The best IT contractor relationships don't start with a brief.

They start with a conversation. A referral from someone who's worked with you before. A recommendation from a peer who knows how you operate under pressure.

By the time a formal engagement begins, the hard part of the decision is already made.

That's true on both sides. Organisations aren't just hiring capability, they're managing risk.

And contractors aren't just looking for work, they're building a career that compounds over time.

The common thread is trust. And trust isn't built through applications. It's built through proximity, shared experience, and showing up consistently over time.

That's what Umbrella Club is designed for. Not just connecting contractors with opportunities, but creating the conditions where both sides already know each other before the work begins.

Independent, together.

It's the number one reason IT professionals don't make the move to contracting. But let's look at what security actually means in 2026.

There are now 1.1 million independent contractors in Australia, up 33,000 in the past year alone (ABS). These aren't people who couldn't find permanent work. They chose this.

On income, contractors typically earn 15 to 30% more than permanent employees in equivalent roles (Bigdream) to account for leave and other entitlements. For IT professionals with in-demand skills, that gap is often wider.

And on the fear of gaps between contracts? That's a real consideration. But it's also largely a network problem, not a market problem. IT contractors with strong peer relationships and community backing spend far less time searching than those going it alone.

Contracting is no longer viewed as a short-term solution or side path. It has become a strategic, long-term career choice. Oncoreservices

The security of a permanent role is real. So is the ceiling that comes with it.
