The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed each year on 21 March, commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, when 69 people were killed during
a peaceful protest against apartheid pass laws in South Africa. Established by the United Nations, this day calls on all of us to reflect, raise awareness and take action against racism.
Today, it is more important than ever to support refugee and migrant communities in Australia. Many of us are privileged to have migrated by choice , but for others, migration is not a choice, it is a necessity. People are forced to leave their homes due to war, conflict, persecution or fear for their lives.
So what does it say about us if we associate illegality or criminality with someone simply because of where they come from?
Migration is part of the human story, we all share common origins.
At Kowanj, we stand for inclusion, dignity and the recognition of our shared humanity.
