Bridging the language gap with Africans involves understanding that Africa is linguistically diverse, with thousands of languages spoken across the continent.

At Kowanj, we believe cultural awareness goes beyond language β€” it’s about understanding people, context and lived experiences.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, observed each year on 21 March, commemorates the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, when 69 people were killed during
a peaceful protest against apartheid pass laws in South Africa. Established by the United Nations, this day calls on all of us to reflect, raise awareness and take action against racism.

Today, it is more important than ever to support refugee and migrant communities in Australia. Many of us are privileged to have migrated by choice , but for others, migration is not a choice, it is a necessity. People are forced to leave their homes due to war, conflict, persecution or fear for their lives.

So what does it say about us if we associate illegality or criminality with someone simply because of where they come from?

Migration is part of the human story, we all share common origins.

At Kowanj, we stand for inclusion, dignity and the recognition of our shared humanity.

Labour Day in Victoria commemorates the struggle for the eight-hour workday and fair labour rights. Today, we honour that legacy by continuing to work toward equity in our community.
At Kowanj, we recognise the tireless commitment of our volunteers and staff who, every day, contribute to building a more just and inclusive community.

Today, on International Women’s Day, we come together at Kowanj to honour the strength, courage, and leadership of migrant women workers.

Every day, our team proudly supports migrant workers to understand, exercise, and promote their rights. Many women have transformed experiences of abuse, discrimination, and injustice into powerful stories of resilience and change. Their leadership inspires others to learn about their rights, to stand together, and to improve their working conditions.

We stand with them. And we remain committed to advancing dignity, equality, and justice for all.
