“I just love helping people” 💙

Six months into her traineeship at Beveridge Primary School, Sarah Huggins has already discovered how rewarding a career in education can be.

Working alongside the school’s PE teachers, Sarah helps set up equipment, supports students, runs activities and makes sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved.

But the traineeship has given Sarah more than workplace experience. She’s built strong relationships with students and staff, grown confidence in herself and is now exploring opportunities to continue her career in education after her traineeship.

“A traineeship lets you see what a job is actually like in real life and gain experience while you’re learning.”

From working at 7-Eleven as a university student to becoming a Senior Physiotherapist in just four years – Will Blair's journey highlights the impact of the AFL SportsReady Indigenous Cadetship Program in conjunction with Queensland Health.

Proud Wakka Wakka, Cobble Cobble and Jinibara man, Will completed an AFL SportsReady Indigenous Cadetship at STARS Hospital while studying Physiotherapy at The University of Queensland.

Today, he's transitioned from cadet to clinician, working at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. He has also recently accepted a Senior Physiotherapist position in the Emergency Department at Caboolture Hospital.

For Will, the cadetship was a career-defining opportunity.

"I genuinely do not believe that I would be working at this hospital without it. It really got my foot in the door."

The experience gave him the confidence, clinical skills and real-world experience to transition seamlessly into the healthcare industry.

"When I hit the ground running as a new graduate, it was very seamless because I'd already had those experiences during my cadetship."

Now, Will is paying it forward by mentoring the next generation of cadets and encouraging other students to seize the same opportunity.

"Just give it a go. It's basically paid work experience and when the time comes for applying for jobs, you really will stand out."

AFL SportsReady’s VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VDSS) Sport & Recreation Program takes that existing passion and transforms it into the practical skills, knowledge and confidence the sports industry values.

This isn’t learning from a textbook alone. Students explore real industry challenges, learn from experienced trainers, visit industry environments and connect with the people shaping the world of sport.

From Victoria Park and AFL House excursions to guest speakers from across the industry - students gain real experiences that connect learning with future career pathways.

2027 Indigenous School-Based Traineeship opportunities with CBA are now open!

If you're an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander secondary school student, this is your opportunity to earn while you learn, gain real workplace experience and prepare for your future career.

AFL SportsReady, in partnership with Commonwealth Bank (CBA) is offering opportunities nationwide for students currently in Year 10 and Year 11.

Through the program, you’ll:
✔ Complete a fully funded Certificate III in Business

✔ Build customer service, communication and workplace skills

The best learning doesn’t always happen in the classroom - sometimes it happens on the field, behind the scenes and alongside the people shaping the industry.

Our VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VDSS) Sport and Recreation program gives Year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to experience the sport industry from the inside, while building practical skills, confidence and career pathways.

Through a mix of online learning and hands-on industry experiences, students can:
🏃 Develop practical sport and recreation skills
🏟️ Explore real industry environments
🎤 Learn from professionals working in sport

Delivered by SportsReady Education (RTO 22394), students can complete our new Dual Certificate pathway:
- SIS20122 Certificate II in Sport and Recreation
- SIS30122 Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation
