People might dislike the unions of today, but back in the mid 1800's they were the reasons labour laws came into effect and 8 hour work days became law. If it was not for the trade unions of the 1850's fighting for workers rights we might not have the labour laws we have today.

Though today Victoria and Tasmania have a public holiday in celebration of workers rights and working conditions, we do seem to forget the reason for the day.

Some food for thought: Next time you complain about your working conditions (of having to do an hour's overtime or are unable to take leave when you want to), remember back in the 1850's workers often worked up to 14 hours a day, 6 days a week and could be fired without warning or reason at anytime. Thankfully these conditions are not the norm today!

Today is International Woman's Day so we decided to map out some of the struggles woman have faced in Australian workplaces since WWI (and yes we still have some distance to go for equal pay across the board!)

For a detailed timeline check below (this is only a highlight).

Did you know it is ILLEGAL to only advertise for a certain s*x or someone from a certain religion/ethical background when looking for staff?

If a business or someone representing them advertises on Facebook or a job board that they only want someone from a particular background (or excludes people based on s*x, race or religion) they can be reported to the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission. Before posting a job advert anywhere on social media, make sure you familiarise yourself with the The Equal Opportunity Act 2010, or it could end up being a very expensive mistake.

BEWARE of scare tactics during your job search. This was from a Facebook group this morning. For the record - there is NO COMPLIANCE required for Australian resumes, there are certain things you do not need to include such as DOB and s*x, but that is not a legal requirement to leave it off.

Before hiring a resume writer do your research, and find someone who is ethical and will give you the right information/documents to benefit you, not just line the writers pockets.

If you would like referrals to some ethical resume writers we have 2 we highly recommend (and they come from recruiting backgrounds!)

Talent attraction goes further than posting an advert on Seek 😉

Many companies, especially their HR professionals who are hired to fill available roles on their behalf can be very protective over their open roles.

Restaurant Manager required for a well-known and much loved establishment in the Bayside area.

Our client is looking for someone who wants to make this role their own, implement initiatives to motivate the team and perfect any systems that may require tweaking.

Reporting to the Operations Manager and working closely with the Head Chef and Cafe Manager, the role will see the right applicant take the establishment to the next level. With an amazing ocean and great food, their clientele is well established and loyal.

Starting ASAP would be fantastic, however my client will wait for the right applicant to serve out their notice period if required.

For more information let us know! Interviewing ASAP (and yes we still conduct interviews on weekends when required).

Do you know a locally based Chef who is not happy in their current role, or would love a chance to become a head chef of a very popular local restaurant? (Located in the Narre Warren/Berwick/Officer area).

Our client is looking for a superstar, someone who is passionate about real food and service and wants the chance to step up and make the Head Chef role their own.

Being a great place to work, our client is open to a Sous Chef who would like to take a step up, or a Chef de Partie who has aspirations of being a Head Chef in the future.

If you know of someone who would be perfect for this role let us know confidentially by sending us a PRIVATE MESSAGE.

If you are keen yourself to apply for the role please send your resume to [email protected]
