Being on the frontline of trauma can have terrible consequences for some emergency service workers.

Today is ... An excellent reminder to assess how you feel, and motivate you to take action if you are feeling less than ok.

I want to make a particular call-out to Services Personnel (Defence/Military, Ambulance Officers, Police Officers, and Firefighters) - you cannot help others effectively if you are not looking after yourself and your own wellbeing.

To the families of services personnel, you are particularly prone to mental health issues due to the levels of stress and secondary trauma you suffer daily. PLEASE, make sure you get assistance and are supported... being 'there' for your loved one in the services, means taking a leadership role in mental wellness.

Today the 7th anniversary of Black Saturday fires. Reminds us of the vital work of career firefighters & volunteer CFA. It is also important to think of the work police, ambos, SES, and other emergency workers did over that tragic day and those days/weeks/months following..

PTSD has ravaged many career & volunteer services workers since Black Saturday, many of them left with horrific mental scars and long-lasting health impacts of the trauma, and for many of them, the trauma of that day ended their careers...

The families of these services personnel still to this very day are impacted, supporting and providing a solid foundation to the lives of these service people. They are there with every aspect of the PTSD, the nightmares, the flashbacks, and the triggers, the anxiety, depression, and insomnia. We must not forget what the families do for our services personnel.

On this day, let us too remember all of those who passed, and those survivors whose lives will never be the same... Our thoughts are with you on this day.

Recently we were able to have a good conversation with Australian Ambassador for Women and Girls, Natasha Stott-Despoja regarding TheSRF. We were deeply encouraged by her words of support, particularly as it relates to the support and recognition of the families of services personnel.

We are deeply committed to bringing the message of 'family recognition' to the world, as we know just how vitally important and significant family is, for the health and wellbeing of those who serve... Without the strong resilient families that support of service men and women, the whole community would suffer...

Services families are the ABSOLUTE backbone of the military and emergency services...

On National Police Remembrance Day, let us take a few moments to pay our respects to all police. They put their lives on the line everyday to provide each and every one of us a more safe and secure community.

A little appreciation and recognition for their service goes a long way, and perhaps, even just for today may they know how appreciated they are.

Tomorrow is National Police Remembrance Day (Australia).. It is VERY important that the families of officers are supported, both during the member's life, and in their death..

Families are the vital social construct that lies at the foundation of every service person's life... Untrained in mental health, yet take the full brunt of service life and the mental/emotional impacts that it has on a service person's life... Often too, they suffer from secondary PTSD (as a result of the support debriefing they tend to be exposed to...)

Whilst it is vital to remember Police who have passed in the line of duty, never let us forget the families who are so often forgotten...

Tomorrow, I will stand at my local service wearing my Services Recognition Feather and represent every Police family in this country.. I will hold their energy and love in mine, as I stand to pay tribute to the fallen...
