Mayet Ojeda Hey! I'm Mayet. I decided to reach new horizons and moved to Australia in 2013. I'm a migrant, a job seeker, and a recruiter - all in one.

Now, I'm teaching you all I know!

๐Ÿ’กThe way you *show up* matters๐Ÿ’ก

I want to believe that you are somehow in the search for career progression.

Maybe you are a migrant looking to better your professional situation, or an student day-dreaming with graduation day, or simply someone who enjoys career talk and inspiration.

If you are looking for a job right now, and struggling to keep yourself motivated day-in & day-out, this is for youโ€ฆ

How to stay motivated through job hunting:

1) STOP comparing yourself: Value who you are and your uniqueness! Good employers are after hiring people who embody the *whole package*
2) Don't be your worst critic: Doubting yourself? Thatโ€™s ok, we all do, but you are much more capable than you secretly rate yourself.
3) Find your champions: Identifying a well-intentioned friend to talk when things are not going to plan, a couple of key referees, a mentor, or simply a Career Coach, will always support your journey.

Also, think that employers are looking for people who can role model the culture of the company they represent, thatโ€™s the reason why you need to show up with a positive attitude through the recruitment process once it has started๐Ÿค“

How to convey your positive attitude to employers:

1) Embrace ongoing learning: Make sure you are showcasing your openness to learn on your professional documents, your LinkedIn profile (the About section is perfect for this), and through conversation โ€“ e.g. Interviews.
2) Own your mistakes: Prepare yourself to disclose a professional mistake, and how you handled it; be vulnerable, honest and constructive.
3) Accept new challenges: Donโ€™t be afraid to let them know youโ€™d be open to take on new challenges and responsibilities when the time is right.

What do you think about this? Is it โ€œthat* important to have a positive attitude?

I am listening, comment belowโฌ‡๏ธ

More about job search strategy๐Ÿค“

Job searching can be draining, and it can get even more challenging when youโ€™ve moved to a new country.

The mix of new surroundings, a foreign language, cultural differences, lack of network, among many other things, can make it seem just *way too hard*โ€ฆ

If youโ€™re *really* want to resume your career somewhere new, you need to think ahead and TAKE ACTION๐Ÿ˜

Being strategic, and planning your job search, wonโ€™t just make you more successful. It will also soothe you, and keep you feeling motivated and happy.

Above all, you also must be sure that youโ€™re putting your efforts towards landing a job that fills your days with satisfactionโœจ

You canโ€™t just pass the blame of not getting what you want to covid-19, the recruitment process, the companies, the recruiters or your diverse background. The job market is really active right now๐Ÿ”ฅ

You have decided to live abroad, therefore...

Be Flexible, Adapt & Thrive!!!

And make it your mission in life to show companies how lucky theyโ€™ll be to have YOU working for them.

What would you be doing today to showcase your talents? I'm keen to know๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

It is Career Strategy Week at Proudly Accented๐Ÿค“

And I am dropping 3 reasons to come up with a strategy for your job search!

Reason 3/3: You want to be happyโœจ

The work of a job hunter drains lots of energy, emotions, and TIME.

As a migrant myself, Iโ€™ve known many people (me, for starters) who have gone through the journey of sacrificing their professional happiness and satisfaction for a while, for the sake of working towards big, bold life goals:

Completing Masters and PhDs, obtaining permanent visa status in a foreign country, and even pursuing a new citizenship.

I personally went through very colourful circumstances before landing in my current career path๐Ÿ˜Š

In my eyes, all migrants want the same thingโ€ฆ we want to belong!

And once those big goals are achieved, I think the next stage is to be fulfilled in our own skin, and to wake up feeling pumped to have another day of work ahead!

Is this you, too?๐Ÿ˜‰

It is Career Strategy Week at Proudly Accented๐Ÿค“

And I am sharing 3 reasons to come up with a strategy for your job search this week!

Reason 2/3: You need balance, and emotional driveโœจ

Besides all the time it devours, a job hunt is emotionally strenuous.

Letโ€™s address the elephant in the room: youโ€™ll be getting pesky rejection emails. And to get those, youโ€™ll be sending out applications with custom cover letters, researching, networking, taking phone screenings, rehearsing your pitch, travelling for interviewsโ€ฆ

Youโ€™ll likely even have to skip some work in order to make it to those interviews, am I right?

The point is, when your search does finally pay off, youโ€™ll want to secure a job that pleases you๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

Therefore, make sure youโ€™re directing your energy towards a rewarding position๐Ÿ”ฅ

You want to start a job where youโ€™re grinning, ear-to-ear, on your first day. A job that empowers you, in a career that grows you and challenges you.

At the end of the day, you donโ€™t want to repeat the job searching process again and again.

Do you agree? Can't wait to hear what you think๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

You are a valuable person. Your time is valuable. Soโ€ฆ use it wisely!

It is Career Strategy Week at Proudly Accented๐Ÿค“

And I'll be dropping 3 reasons to come up with a strategy for your job search this week!

Reason 1/3: You donโ€™t want a *job*โ€ฆ You want a CAREERโœจ

What would you like better: a job, or a career? No-brainer, right?

But I also know migration itโ€™s a tough situation to be in: your savings dwindling, day by day, in a new place, and you still donโ€™t have a paycheck coming in!

I totally get it.

So, it can be tempting, and sometimes it is necessary, to just pick up the first gig that gets offered to you.

In the long run, though, it will be to your advantage to work towards landing a job that works for YOUR life goals.

Not only because youโ€™ll be happier and more successful in the long run, but also because youโ€™ll feel better during the search process!

Because job searching is a full-time job in itself, it will be so much more bearable if you know that the next job you get โ€“ when you DO finally get it (which you will) โ€“ will be one that youโ€™ll genuinely enjoy๐Ÿคฉ

A job that makes you work towards advancing yourself as a professional, and towards the paycheck, just as much.

By viewing the hunt from this angle, youโ€™ll feel more motivated, more excited, and extra confident!

What do you think about this approach? I'd love to know๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ

Change your mindset on Sundays๐Ÿ™Œ

Read this a couple of times:

Language dictates Perspective > Perspective commands Mood > Mood rules your Actions > Your Actions pre-empt Your Success

If you find this to be true for you too, you need to reinforce the use of positive language in order to maintain a positive attitude.

Execrate from your vocabulary: I wonโ€™t & I canโ€™t.

Letโ€™s try this instead:

I WILL & I CAN!

Because if you change the phrase โ€œI will never find a jobโ€ for โ€œI havenโ€™t found a job YETโ€, you would be implicitly telling yourself that there is no reason that will prevent you to find the job of your dreams๐Ÿคฉ

Avoid self-sabotaging yourself with words๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

You DO have amazing qualifications and experience, which will allow you to get wherever you want to!

Are you moving the needle towards what you want? How?

The period that changed meโœจ

It took me months to get my first professional job in Australia...
โ €โ €
And I strongly feel the work I poured into my job search back then, plus all the corporate insights I've gained recruiting for most-loved and award-winning companies in Australia and overseas, shouldn't stay with me.

I want you to know Iโ€™ve been shaped by both sides of the story๐ŸŽญ

Whether you are in the waiting camp or maybe in the happily employed boat, I get you and I am here to share my journey so you can get inspired to pursue your own๐Ÿ’ฅ

New Milestone Alert ๐Ÿšจ

Happy Wednesday, y'all!

I just wanted to share that the past few weeks have left me with a warm feeling, as I humbly navigate the joy - and responsibilities - of being recognised as one of "The 10 Career Coaches To Watch in 2021" by The Australian Business Journal๐ŸŽ‰

This month had a different connotation in my mind, considering I started my corporate career in Australia 7 years ago in June

But from this year on, June will be the month I celebrate how I am pleased with myself and with this path, which entails...

Career seasonality awarenessโœจ

In which season of your career are you?

I used to think I was only being productive if I was achieving measurable and concrete outcomesโ€ฆ however, productivity can also occur in times of stillness.

Is it your time to focus, speed up and make things happen, or is it time to slow down, strategise and recalibrate (to move forward)?

Personally, Iโ€™ve been slowing down and focusing on a few little (but very important) bits of my professional and personal life:

โœ” I prioritised my private clients and their career milestones
โœ” I identified remarkable talent for a community-based organisation for the past 4 months
โœ” Iโ€™ve taken advantage of this quiet - yet powerful - work approach to attain industry acknowledgment โ€“ more about this *soon*
โœ” I focused on being present, meaning: less social media, but more intentional
โœ” Iโ€™ve nurtured my body, my family and my personal relationships

I invite you to think about your own situation and what you need to move forward, and act appropriatelyโ€ฆ

Even if that means to reduce your speed for a while, and focus on what you already have on your plate๐Ÿคฉ

What do you think? Let me know in the comments โœ

Get the momentum going for youโœจ

I've been quiet here - I know -, but I've been doing so much!

I am a firm believer that, to get real results, I need to focus on a small number of things, run with those and smash them... and then move on to the next big thing๐Ÿคฉ

This has given me RESULTS in so many aspects of my life:

Migration wise, when I decided to move to Australia, there were really not many things as important in my life:

From researching so much I even knew what was on the streets upon arrival after too much street view on Google Maps...

To not needing migration lawyers for anything! I am an Australian citizen now and I never used any migration help because... who will read all those visa options and requirements better than me?

Professionally, I operate in a similar way:

I got so many NOs when I started to apply for jobs here, that I couldn't but make it a life priority to get a YES!

But a YES, job wise, in a second language, and in a different job market, doesn't happen by chance; it occurs once you have upgraded the way you present yourself to the market.

I believe that there is absolutely no excuse to stay somewhere I am unhappy at... I am *not* a tree ๐ŸŒณ

My suggestion is always to research and adopt a trial and error mindset, because progressing is very much about DOING & LEARNING, and not so much about overanalysing each step or each failure...

Thatโ€™s the value of ACTION!

And Iโ€™ve been insanely passionate about others taking action based on my own experience๐Ÿ˜Š

My Story

Think of Ricky Martin and Shakira. They both were very successful singers who used to sing mostly in Spanish. At some point, they felt it was time to reach new audiences and started singing in English. The result: first-class musical hits! I feel that my story somehow relates to such journeys, but within the People and Culture space. After spending very rewarding years working across Latin American markets, I decided to reach new horizons and moved to Australia. The result: a successful professional jump that has allowed me to be part of Australia Post and PepsiCo ANZ. Most recently, Iโ€™ve been enjoying myself while working for a major Australian power-brand โ€“ Coles! My assertiveness towards people matters comes from holding a Bachelor of Industrial Relations with a Major in Human Resources, as well as a Master of Strategic Human Resources Direction. Today, I can say Iโ€™ve helped thousands of people in founding their dream jobs and navigating the corporate world. Also, my expertise in both Talent Acquisition and Human Resources makes me a point of reference for family and friends, who come to me for advice regarding their professional careers.
