As I move on to another of our 25 posts for 25 years, it is worth commenting on our experience of what is arguably the biggest structural change in white-collar working arrangements in the last 100 years. It is no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic brought working from home to the forefront, while hybrid working appears to be here to stay.
There are lessons in this for candidates, clients, and executive search and recruitment consultants like ourselves. We benefit from being globally networked through NPAworldwide, SpenglerFox, and IXPA for interim management. These are all non-competing networks, giving us both reach and depth when it comes to finding candidates and servicing overseas-based clients.
The reason we have been able to make this work is that we have always had a “Work from Anywhere” philosophy. To a large extent, this was shaped by our family being spread across the world. One son stayed here; one married an American after a college basketball career; and the third—who has recently married an Australian—had an extensive college and professional basketball career that saw him play, study, and work around the world. If we wanted to see them, we had to take our work with us.
We have always had the advantage of being able to work while some of our clients are sleeping, allowing us to deliver timely results. This philosophy has also enabled us to seamlessly work with clients and candidates across Australia and New Zealand, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Japan, the USA, and even Togo in West Africa. We hired our Digital Marketing Manager in Melbourne—he still works with us and now lives in Jakarta.
While we can find candidates and fill roles anywhere, the lesson for mid-market candidates—whose first question is often about hybrid work or working from home—is this: “If you truly believe your job can be done from home, it can be done from anywhere.”
Food for thought.
