A Special Thank to all the professionals that have been offering their knowledge and guidance to our members.
Many Kiwis are seeking to improve their family's opportunities by moving to Australia. While we are focusing on Melbourne (and Victoria), much of the information is also appropriate for Australia wide.
Yes there are some other groups out there. but where it can be confusing, and why this group focuses on Melbourne, it that there are different rules in the different states.
What is the right answer in Victoria, may not be the right answer in Queensland or New South Wales..
With many Kiwis not having any experience with states or politics in general, overlooking which state can create confusion and also be an expensive mistake.
Some things in Australia are a National/Federal arrangement, GST and Income Tax.
But others are State based, Drivers Licencing and property tax.
This groups goal is to help new arrivals to understand the basics that might otherwise be assumed to be the same as New Zealand, due to the numerous similarities, but those similarities are not the same as the local laws.
GST is 10% in Australia and it's not on everything.
As an Employee, you get a tax free threshold of $18,200 a year, this means you pay much less tax if you are on a lower income.
Super is paid at 11% of you Base income, into your Super fund.
