Ever wondered what actually makes a recruiter put you forward for the good jobs? It is simpler than you might think.

It is not about having the flashiest resume. Over and over, the things that stand out are the basics done well:

Reliability. Turn up, on time, ready to go. It is the number one thing clients ask us for.
Communication. Answer your phone, reply to messages, and keep us in the loop.
Presentation. Show up looking like you are ready to work.
Following directions. Listen on site and do what is asked, safely.

And one piece of advice we give again and again: do not chase a role just for the money. You will be doing this work for a long time, so pick something you actually enjoy.

Get the basics right and you will always have work. Simple as that.

To close out Tradies National Health Month, one for everyone who works outdoors.

Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world, and tradies clock up more sun than almost anyone. Over the years that adds up, and skin cancer is the most common cancer we get. The good news is it is also one of the most preventable.

A few habits worth building:

Cover up where you can. Long sleeves, a collar, and a brim on the hard hat all help.
Sunscreen SPF50+ on any exposed skin, and top it up through the day.
Take smoko in the shade when you can.
Get to know your own skin, and see your GP about anything new or changing.

Two minutes of sun sense now beats a scare down the track. Look after your skin. It has to last the whole career.

A quick translation guide for anyone new to the tools.

“She’ll be right” = it is definitely not right, but we will deal with it later.
“Two minute job” = clear your afternoon.
“Chuck us the whatsit” = pass me the thing, you know the one.
“Bit of a shocker” = something has gone seriously wrong.
“Not bad” = actually very good. High praise.
